Most hotels near Piazzale Roma and the station are functional places to sleep before a train. The Papadopoli is the exception: an elegant boutique hotel in the MGallery collection, set beside the Giardini Papadopoli, a small public park at the end of the Grand Canal, so that many of its windows look over trees and water rather than bus stops. It sits in Santa Croce, a two-minute walk from Piazzale Roma, where buses and taxis from the airport and the mainland arrive, and about five minutes from Santa Lucia station across the Constitution Bridge, which means you can reach it with luggage without a single long bridge climb from the bus terminus. Inside, the style is Venetian with a contemporary twist: rich fabrics, dark woods, mirrors and glass, with a cosy lounge bar and a restaurant called the Winter Garden, Giardino d'Inverno in Italian, which serves dishes inspired by Venetian tradition, as well as breakfast. Rooms range from superior singles, doubles and twins with garden or city views, through deluxe doubles with a canal view or a terrace, to suites, including an executive suite with a private terrace and a top suite with a terrace and a Jacuzzi. Families are well catered for, with superior triple rooms overlooking the park and deluxe triples with canal views, a children's menu in the restaurant and a stated welcome for children of all ages. It is a calm, polished place to stay, ideal for a first night or a last night in Venice, or for a whole stay if you like the idea of being at the gateway rather than the centre.

Location logic: you are at the western gateway of the city. From here, the Grand Canal vaporetto lines start at Piazzale Roma, so you can ride the length of the canal to San Marco, and the Frari, San Rocco and Campo Santa Margherita are a short walk into Santa Croce and San Polo. The Rialto is about twenty minutes on foot. The trade-off is that the immediate area is a transport hub rather than a postcard, and San Marco is a boat ride or a long walk away.

Practicalities and room advice: request a park-view or canal-view room, as city-view rooms look over the streets around the bus terminus. Triples are the family choice, and the terrace suites are worth it for a special occasion. Parking is not included; drivers use the public Garage San Marco at Piazzale Roma, a few minutes away. The hotel runs occasional value offers for longer stays booked ahead, and the city's per-night tourist tax is charged on top of the room rate.

Who it suits: families and couples who want an elegant hotel with an easy arrival, travellers with early trains or flights, and anyone who wants to start their Venice with a ride down the whole Grand Canal. It is less suited to travellers who want to be in the thick of San Marco or in a quiet residential lane. Compared with the Avani Rio Novo across the canal in Dorsoduro, it is smaller, more intimate and more decorative; compared with the Splendid, it is calmer but less central.
