Hotel Sacher is the hotel the world pictures when it thinks of Vienna. It opened in 1876 on what is now Philharmoniker Strasse, directly behind the State Opera and beside the Albertina, and in 2026 it marks its 150th anniversary, still family-owned and still at the centre of the city's social life. The name came first from a cake: Franz Sacher created the Sacher-Torte, the dense chocolate cake with apricot jam and dark glaze, for a prince's table in 1832, and his son Eduard founded the hotel. Under Eduard's widow Anna Sacher, a famously strong-willed, cigar-smoking hotelier who ran the house for decades, it became the meeting place of archdukes, diplomats and opera stars, and its separate dining rooms, the chambres separees, were the most discreet in Vienna. Today the hotel has 152 individually designed rooms and suites, decorated by co-owner Alexandra Winkler with the designer Pierre-Yves Rochon in a rich, classic style of silk wallpapers, antiques and original paintings, with suites named after operas, and the best rooms look straight onto the State Opera. The restaurants and bars are institutions in their own right: the Rote Bar for refined Viennese cuisine, the Gruene Bar for fine dining on selected evenings, the Blaue Bar for cocktails, and the Salon Sacher for late evenings, while the Cafe Sacher serves the Original Sacher-Torte to a queue of visitors from early morning until late at night. The Sacher Boutique Spa adds massages and beauty treatments, a hammam, a sauna and a modern fitness room. The hotel ranks among the world's top hotels, with three Michelin Keys and a place in The World's 50 Best Hotels list for 2026. Rates are at the top of the Vienna market, and the old-world style will not suit those who prefer minimalism; for everyone else, it is Vienna in its purest form.
Living the Sacher: the rooms are the hotel's strongest argument, each different, with high ceilings, heavy fabrics, antique furniture and modern bathrooms, and the opera-view categories and suites are worth the premium for the view across to the lit-up house. Service is formal but warm, with the polish of a house that has hosted royalty for a century and a half. Breakfast is served daily in the morning, and the cake can be delivered to your room or shipped home in its famous wooden box.
Eating and drinking: the Rote Bar, with its red velvet and chandeliers, is the classic setting for Tafelspitz, Wiener Schnitzel and Viennese desserts, and especially popular after the opera. The Blaue Bar is an intimate cocktail bar, the Salon Sacher an elegant late-night space, and the Gruene Bar the place for a more formal dinner on selected evenings. The Cafe Sacher is open to everyone and has a constant line of visitors, so hotel guests have the advantage of enjoying the cake without the queue in the hotel's own spaces. The Sacher Boutique Spa recommends booking treatments in advance.
Location: Philharmoniker Strasse 4 is about as central as Vienna gets, opposite the State Opera, next to the Albertina and the Burggarten, at the top of Kaerntner Strasse, and five minutes' walk from Karlsplatz station, where three underground lines meet. The Hofburg, St Stephens Cathedral and the Naschmarkt are all on foot. For an anniversary, a honeymoon or a first trip to Vienna where the hotel should be part of the story, the Sacher is the natural choice; in its anniversary year, expect special events and packages.
