MEININGER is the budget brand that families and groups across Europe have learned to trust, and its Downtown Franz property is one of the best-placed cheap stays in Vienna. It stands at Rembrandtstrasse 21 in Leopoldstadt, the 2nd district, between the Augarten park and the Danube Canal, in a residential neighbourhood of cafes, bakeries and small shops. On foot, St Stephens Cathedral and the Hofburg are around twenty to twenty-five minutes away, the Prater is about ten minutes, and the Augarten, with its Baroque avenues and playgrounds, is practically on the doorstep; public transport covers the rest. The concept is a hybrid between hotel and hostel, and the strength for families is the range of private rooms: single-use doubles, twins, doubles, triples, quads and a family quad with twin beds plus bunk beds, all private, so a family of four can share one room at a fraction of a central hotel's price. Shared dorms for four to six people, including female-only options, suit backpackers and student groups. The public areas are designed for a budget stay that does not feel like one: a guest kitchen where you can cook your own meals, which is a big saving with children, a hotel bar and lounge for evenings, and a game zone that keeps teenagers occupied. Breakfast is served daily as a buffet at extra charge, slightly cheaper when you book directly, and it is good value for families. The property has recently been refreshed. Rooms are simple, functional and clean rather than characterful, which is exactly what the price promises.
Who it suits: families on a budget who want a private room for everyone; school and youth groups; backpackers and solo travellers who want a social atmosphere; and anyone planning to spend time in the Augarten, the Prater or the Leopoldstadt neighbourhood. It is less suited to travellers looking for a romantic or historic stay.
Living in it: book a family quad early, as they are the first to go in school holidays. Use the guest kitchen for breakfasts and simple dinners, and stock up at the supermarkets nearby or at the Karmelitermarkt, the district's lively food market. The walk into the old town along the Danube Canal is pleasant, especially in the evening, and the Augarten is perfect for letting children run off energy after museums. The game zone and lounge make it easy to relax in the evening without going out.
Value: this is one of the most affordable private-room options within walking distance of the old town, and for a family the savings on room rate and meals can be substantial. Vienna's accommodation tax rose to 5 percent of the room price from 1 July 2026 and is set to rise to 8 percent from 1 July 2027, so check whether it is included in the rate you see. Expect self-service rather than personal service, and bring earplugs if you are sharing a dorm.
