citizenM Washington DC Capitol

The smart-value base for the Mall: compact tech-forward rooms with XL king beds, a 24/7 canteen, a rooftop sushi bar, and L'Enfant Plaza Metro right outside, minutes from Air and Space and the Spy Museum.

★★★★★

citizenM Washington DC Capitol is the best-value design hotel near the National Mall, and the one to book when you want to spend your money on the city rather than the room. It sits on School Street SW, a few blocks south of the Mall in the L'Enfant Plaza area, and its location is its secret weapon: the L'Enfant Plaza Metro station, served by several lines, is right outside, the Smithsonian museums on the south side of the Mall are a short walk, and the Spy Museum, ARTECHOUSE and the Wharf are all close. The rooms follow the citizenM formula: compact but cleverly designed for two adults, each with an extra-large king bed against a wall of windows, a rainfall shower, blackout blinds and mood lighting, all controlled from a tablet that also runs the smart TV and blinds. What the rooms lack in floor space the public areas make up for. The ground-floor living room is a colorful, art-filled lounge with work tables and sofas, and canteenM serves food and drinks around the clock, from a breakfast buffet with unlimited barista coffee to evening cocktails. On the roof, Sushi by Bou runs a cocktail and sushi bar with skyline views. Free Wi-Fi and a 24-hour fitness center are included, and check-in is fast at self-service kiosks. The honest notes: rooms are small and suit couples or solo travelers rather than families, there is no on-site parking (a nearby lot charges extra), and pets are not allowed. The hotel is now part of Marriott's portfolio, so Bonvoy members can book and earn points. Fit: first-timers, budget-minded couples, solo travelers and anyone who wants to walk to the Mall each morning.

citizenM began in Amsterdam with the idea of affordable luxury for frequent travelers: cut what guests rarely use, such as large desks and closets, and invest in great beds, showers and social spaces. The Washington Capitol location opened as part of the brand's American expansion and is built to sustainability standards, with LEED and BREEAM certification. It is now booked through Marriott. The brand's public spaces are filled with contemporary art and design furniture, and the living room doubles as a coworking space for business travelers. Housekeeping is on request rather than daily, part of the brand's sustainability approach, which keeps prices down and suits short stays well.

Room craft: every room is essentially the same, so request a higher floor for views over Southwest and the Mall area. Use the tablet to set the lighting and temperature before bed. Grab breakfast in canteenM before an early museum start, and reserve the rooftop bar for an evening drink, which can be busy on weekends.

Practicals: 550 School Street SW. L'Enfant Plaza Metro is outside the door, connecting directly to Reagan National Airport on the Blue and Yellow lines. Check-in from 2 p.m., check-out at 11 a.m. Paid parking is available at a nearby lot. Fit: first-timers, budget-minded couples and solo travelers who want the Mall on foot.

Good questions

How far is citizenM from the National Mall?+

A short walk. The Smithsonian museums on the south side of the Mall are a few blocks north, and L'Enfant Plaza Metro station is right outside the hotel.

Is it good for families?+

Rooms are designed for two adults with one large king bed, so it suits couples and solo travelers better than families. Larger families should book a suite hotel.

Is there parking?+

There is no on-site parking. A nearby lot offers paid parking, but the Metro at the door makes a car unnecessary for most visitors.
