Rigi, the Queen of the Mountains, is a free-standing massif between Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz, and its summit, Rigi Kulm, at 1,797 metres, gives one of the widest panoramas in Switzerland: on a clear day you see a dozen lakes, the Black Forest in Germany to the north and a chain of Alpine peaks across the southern horizon. It has been a tourist mountain since the early nineteenth century, when travellers came up on foot or by mule to watch the sunrise, and in 1871 the Vitznau-Rigi railway opened as the first mountain railway in Europe, followed by a second cogwheel line from Arth-Goldau. Today Rigi offers the gentlest and most varied of the great Lucerne mountain days. The classic route starts with a boat from Lucerne to Vitznau, about an hour across the lake, followed by the red cogwheel train to Rigi Kulm. At the top, a hotel and restaurants sit just below the summit, and a short walk leads to the viewpoint. From there, well-marked trails run down through meadows and forest; the walk from Rigi Kulm to Rigi Kaltbad, about an hour and a half downhill, is the favourite, with constant views over the lake. At Rigi Kaltbad, the Mineralbad and Spa designed by the architect Mario Botta offers indoor and outdoor pools with mountain views, a perfect end to a walk. From Kaltbad, an aerial cableway drops to Weggis on the lakeshore, where you can take the boat back to Lucerne, completing a classic loop. In winter, Rigi stays open: the trains run year-round, the paths are cleared for winter walks, and there are sledging runs, snowshoe trails and small ski lifts. Because Rigi is fully covered by the Swiss Travel Pass, it is the obvious mountain for pass holders. In late 2026, note that the Weggis to Rigi Kaltbad cableway is closed for maintenance from 16 to 27 November except at weekends, while the Vitznau cogwheel railway keeps running.
The classic loop: from Lucerne, take a morning boat to Vitznau, ride the cogwheel railway to Rigi Kulm, enjoy the view, then walk down to Rigi Kaltbad, have lunch, visit the Botta spa if you have time, and take the cableway down to Weggis for the boat back to Lucerne. The whole circuit is a relaxed full day. If you are coming from Zurich, the reverse approach via Arth-Goldau, on the main north-south rail line, is quicker: a train to Arth-Goldau, the cogwheel railway to Rigi Kulm, then down to Vitznau and the boat to Lucerne, before the train back to Zurich. Tiqets sells guided day tours from Lucerne and from Zurich for those who prefer not to plan the connections themselves.
Sunrise and sunset: the Rigi sunrise was famous long before the railways, and staying overnight at a hotel on Rigi Kulm or Rigi Kaltbad lets you see it without a pre-dawn start. In autumn and winter, when fog covers the lowlands, Rigi is often above the clouds in sunshine, with the summits of the Alps rising out of a white sea. In summer, evenings at Rigi Kaltbad are beautiful and quieter after the day visitors have left.
Who it suits and what to know: Rigi is the best mountain for families, older travellers and anyone who prefers walks and lake views to high Alpine drama; it is lower than Pilatus and Titlis, gentler, and almost entirely green in summer. It is fully covered by the Swiss Travel Pass, making it effectively free for pass holders, and discounted with the Half Fare Card. The Botta spa requires a separate ticket and gets busy on weekends. Check the cableway maintenance dates in November and the winter timetable before planning a winter loop.
