Zurich does Advent with real style, and from mid-November to Christmas Eve the city becomes one of the most festive in Europe, with a cluster of Christmas markets close enough to walk between in an evening. For 2026, the season opens on 19 November. The biggest and most convenient is Polarzauber in the concourse of the main station, open from 19 November to 24 December: more than a hundred stalls under the great station roof, a towering Christmas tree and polar-themed lights, warm and dry whatever the weather, and ideal for a first browse on arrival. A few minutes away, on the Werdmuehleplatz, the Singing Christmas Tree is Zurich's most charming tradition: a tiered wooden tree on which choirs, many of them children, sing carols every day, surrounded by the Wiehnachtsmaert with locally produced organic food, from 19 November to 23 December. In the Old Town, the Niederdorf market, known as the Doerfli, fills the lanes of the east bank with handicrafts and food from around the world, with a small ice rink for children on the Rosenhof, from 19 November to 23 December. Across the river, the Muensterhof market, in front of the Fraumuenster, focuses on local crafts and Zurich brands among historic facades, until 24 December. By the lake, Bellevue Noel, in front of the Opera House, has a walk-through wreath, market stalls and a fondue chalet, from 19 November to 23 December. The Zuercher Weihnachtsallee on the Europaallee, beside the station, adds international food, design stalls, a karaoke bar and another fondue chalet. Beyond the centre, the Uetliberg Winter Wonderland on Zurich's home mountain runs from 6 November 2026 to 31 January 2027, with lights, stalls, candle-making and curling, and the Illuminarium, a show of light installations and illusions in the courtyard of the Swiss National Museum, runs from 5 November to 30 December. The lanes of the Bahnhofstrasse are hung with the famous Lucy lights, and the shops are decorated throughout the season.
How to do it: start at Polarzauber in the station in the late afternoon, then walk down the Bahnhofstrasse under the lights to the Werdmuehleplatz for the Singing Christmas Tree, cross to the Muensterhof, over the Muensterbruecke to the Niederdorf for the Doerfli market, and finish at Bellevue Noel by the lake for fondue. The loop is about two kilometres and makes a perfect first evening. Weekday evenings are calmer than Saturdays, when the markets are very busy. Food and mulled wine are served in deposit mugs that you can return or keep as a souvenir.
Day trips for more markets: Einsiedeln holds a large market in front of its Benedictine abbey from 27 November to 6 December 2026, and Rapperswil-Jona's Christkindlimaert fills the medieval Old Town with more than two hundred stands from 3 to 20 December. Winterthur's winter market runs from 26 November to 23 December. In Lucerne, Lucerne Ice Magic sets up an outdoor rink by the KKL from 20 November 2026 to 1 January 2027.
Practical tips: most markets are free to enter, and stalls accept cards as well as cash. Dress warmly, as Zurich evenings in December are often around freezing. Many markets close on 23 December, while Polarzauber and the Muensterhof stay open to 24 December. Hotels fill up on Advent weekends, so book early, and be aware that shops close early on 24 December and most are closed on 25 and 26 December.
