Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls is where the Zambezi River drops more than a kilometre wide into the Batoka Gorge, a wall of water the locals call Mosi-oa-Tunya, the smoke that thunders. The Zimbabwe-side town sits beside the national park and rainforest, with a bridge to Zambia and the town of Livingstone a few kilometres away. Around the falls you can fly over the gorges by helicopter, cruise the upper Zambezi at sunset, raft Grade 5 rapids, jump from the historic bridge, swim at the edge in Devil's Pool from the Zambian side, or cross to Botswana for elephants on the Chobe River. Visas, the KAZA Univisa and the river level shape every plan, and November brings low water, hot days and the first rains.
