Zayed National Museum

The story of the UAE on Saadiyat Island

The Zayed National Museum is the newest essential stop on Saadiyat Island and the place to understand the country you are visiting. Opened to the public in December 2025 after many years in the planning, it stands in the Saadiyat Cultural District close to the Louvre Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena, in a building designed by Foster and Partners whose tall, curved towers are inspired by the feathers of a falcon in flight, a nod to the founding president’s love of falconry. The galleries tell the story of the land that became the UAE, from early settlements, desert trade routes and the pearling and fishing life of the coast to the union of the emirates in 1971, and they weave in the life, beliefs and leadership of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, whose name the museum carries. Expect archaeological finds, personal objects, oral histories and immersive displays, with plenty to engage families.

How it works: tickets are sold through the official website and through approved resellers, with timed entry at busy times. The museum is on Saadiyat Island, around twenty minutes by taxi from downtown, with parking on site. Because it opened so recently, hours, exhibitions and visitor rules may still be adjusted, so check the official website before you go.

What to expect: the museum is large, modern and air-conditioned, with a series of galleries that build a chronological story. Allow time to read and listen, because the personal stories of Emiratis and the history of pearling and desert life are what make it memorable. Families will find hands-on and immersive elements throughout. There are cafés and a shop on site.

Making the most of it: visit the Zayed National Museum early in your trip, since it explains so much of what you will see elsewhere, from the Grand Mosque named after the same founding president to the desert landscapes on a safari. It sits beside the Louvre and teamLab, so you can make a full day of Saadiyat. Watch for the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, which is due to open nearby in December 2026 and will complete the district.
