Benagil Cave Boat and Kayak Tours

The Algarve's sea cave, on the new rules

Benagil Cave sits on the coast near Lagoa, a short way from the fishing beach of Benagil, and it earns its fame in the first second: you glide in from the Atlantic through a low opening and look up into a vaulted chamber, with a round hole in the roof that pours a column of light onto a small sandy floor. It is carved from soft Algarve limestone and sandstone, and it is only reachable from the sea. For years visitors swam, paddled and landed on the little beach, and the crowds became a safety and conservation problem. New rules introduced in 2025, and in force for the 2026 season, changed how the cave works. Entry is now through organised tours run by licensed operators. Independent swimming into the cave, and using paddleboards or inflatables to reach it, is banned, and so is stepping onto the beach inside. Guided kayak groups are allowed but capped in size, and the number of boats and the time each can spend inside are limited. In practice you choose between a motorised boat tour, which is the easiest and gives you a few minutes at the opening of the cave plus other grottoes and beaches along the coast, or a guided kayak tour from Benagil Beach, which is more active and gives a closer view of the cliffs. Operators run from Benagil Beach, Armação de Pêra, Portimão, Albufeira and Lagos, so you can start from almost any base.

How the rules affect you: the key point is that entry to the cave is never guaranteed. It depends on sea state and on the port authorities, and operators will not enter if conditions are poor, though a reputable one will refund or rebook. You also cannot land on the cave beach, so do not book a tour that promises swimming inside; the cave is for looking, photographing and a short visit by boat or paddle. Expect only a few minutes inside, because the rules and the crowds both limit time. Do not try to swim in on your own: it is banned, and the currents at the mouth are real.

Choosing between boat and kayak: a boat tour of roughly one to two hours is the safe default for families, older travellers and anyone short of energy, and it usually includes neighbouring beaches, arches and the Marinha coast. A guided kayak tour from Benagil Beach is cheaper and quieter and lets you paddle along the cliff base, but it needs reasonable fitness, is weather-dependent, and is limited in group size, so slots sell out in summer. Early morning departures are calmer and less crowded; late afternoon gives warmer light inside the dome.

Planning: book ahead for May to October, check the cancellation policy, and bring a hat, sunscreen and a waterproof bag for your phone. Benagil village itself has little parking, so many visitors take tours from Armação de Pêra, Portimão or Albufeira. In winter, boats still run in good weather, but the Atlantic can close the cave for days, so build a spare day into the plan.

What to expect

The experience

An organised boat or guided kayak trip along the Lagoa coast with a short visit inside Benagil Cave when sea conditions and the port authorities allow it.

Early morning for calm water and fewer boats, or late afternoon for warmer light; May to October has the most reliable weather.

How long

About one to two hours on the water, plus time to meet your operator and board.

Tips

Book a licensed operator and expect no swimming and no landing on the cave beach. Bring a hat, sunscreen and a dry bag, and choose a flexible-cancellation ticket because the sea decides.

Good questions

Can I still swim into Benagil Cave?+

No. Swimming into the cave, including with paddleboards or inflatables, and landing on the beach inside are banned under the rules introduced in 2025. You can only enter on an organised tour by a licensed operator.

Are kayaks still allowed at Benagil?+

Yes, but only as part of a guided tour, and the group size per guide is capped. Independent kayak or paddleboard hire for the cave is not permitted.

Is entry to the cave guaranteed on a boat tour?+

No. Entry depends on sea conditions and on the port authorities, so operators cannot promise it. Look for a flexible or refundable booking.

How long do you spend inside the cave?+

Only a few minutes, because the number of boats and the time each may spend inside are limited. The rest of the trip covers other grottoes and beaches along the coast.

Where should I start from?+

Tours depart from Benagil Beach, Armação de Pêra, Portimão, Albufeira and Lagos. Benagil village has little parking, so a nearby harbour is often easier.
