★★★★★

Cascade Wellness Resort is a large, resort-style hotel on Rua das Ilhas in the Torralta area of Lagos, perched above the water on the western side of town. Its 164 rooms range from classic doubles with garden, pool or sea views to suites, family suites and one- and two-bedroom apartments, which makes it a flexible base for couples, families and small groups. The facilities are the draw: three outdoor pools and a children's pool, one of them a family pool with a natural sand bottom, a full-service spa with treatment rooms and a sauna, a gym, two tennis courts and bike rental. Children are well looked after, with a kids club and a pirate-ship playground. There are three restaurants, a poolside bar and a rooftop terrace, and the setting looks over the coast toward Ponta da Piedade.

Location and getting around: Expedia lists a three-minute walk to Praia do Canavial and about fifteen minutes on foot to the Ponta da Piedade lighthouse, which is the best reason to stay here if the grottoes and the clifftop are your priority. Dona Ana beach and Porto de Mós are roughly twenty minutes away on foot. Lagos old town and the marina are a short taxi ride, and the station is about twelve minutes by car, so plan on a taxi or car for evenings in town. Free self-parking and valet parking are available, and there is an electric-car charger. The airport at Faro is about an hour and six minutes away by car.

Rooms and who it suits: the sea-view doubles and suites are the ones to choose, and the apartments with kitchens suit families staying a week. The hotel suits couples wanting a spa break, and families who want pools, a kids club and a play area on site, so they can switch between the beach and the resort. Some guests describe the rooms as dated, so judge by recent photos and choose a refurbished category if you are particular.

Good to know: breakfast is a buffet for a fee, around nineteen euros for adults at the time of writing, so compare with the cafes in town. The resort is on a slope, so some walks to the beach involve stairs, and it is best for travellers who do not mind a taxi to dinner. Book well ahead for July and August. In winter, the pools and spa are the main attraction, and the coast is quiet.
