Wētā Workshop Unleashed

Behind the scenes with the studio behind Middle-earth

Wētā Workshop is the Wellington studio that built the armour, creatures and miniatures for The Lord of the Rings and many other films, and Unleashed brings its craft to central Auckland. The experience is on Level 5 at 88 Federal Street, opposite the Sky Tower, and runs as a guided tour through a series of imaginary film productions, each in a different genre, showing how ideas become props, creatures and effects. You walk through a hand-built miniature castle and pick up model-making tips, handle the tools the crew use, and see how sculpting, silicone and prosthetics bring characters to life. One section is a horror workshop with a fright house, which guests can skip, so parents of younger children have a choice. Tours run in English and Mandarin, with French and Japanese translation through an app, photography is welcome, and you leave with a souvenir video. This page links to the Tiqets admission ticket.

How to visit: Unleashed opens seven days a week except Christmas Day, and you check in at the Wētā Cave ticketing desk about ten minutes before your tour. Wētā describes the guided tour as around ninety minutes, while the Tiqets listing shows about an hour, so allow ninety minutes to be safe. Lockers are available for medium and large bags, and tour guests receive SkyCity parking validation that reduces the hourly rate. The studio also sells a combined ticket with the Sky Tower.

What to expect: the tour is indoors and fully guided, so it suits a wet day. It is suitable for all ages, but some content is horror-themed, and parental guidance is advised for younger children. Some materials used in the displays, such as latex, silicone and foam, may trigger allergies, and the team asks guests with concerns to get in touch before visiting.

Making the most of it: film fans should plan this as a warm-up for a Hobbiton day trip, since the two together tell the story of how Middle-earth was made. Combine it with the All Blacks Experience on Level 4 and the Sky Tower across the street for a full SkyCity half day.
