Fairmont Baku Flame Towers

Baku's landmark luxury hotel, set inside one of the three Flame Towers with Caspian or city views from most rooms. A spa with a hammam, a rooftop pool and the best skyline address in the city.

★★★★★

The Fairmont Baku occupies one of the three flame-shaped towers that dominate the Baku skyline, at 1A Mehdi Huseyn on the hill above the Old City. It is the city's signature luxury address, with 299 rooms and suites plus 19 serviced hotel apartments, and the hotel's own description is a city-centre location overlooking the medieval Old City and the Caspian Sea. Most rooms have Caspian or city views, and the upper-floor suites are known for their panoramas. Facilities include the Carol Joy Spa with a hammam, saunas and treatments, a rooftop pool and a swimming pool, a fitness centre, several restaurants and bars, and parking included for guests. The Fairmont Gold floor adds lounge access, an honour bar and concierge service. It is the hotel to choose for a splurge, a honeymoon or a trip where you want to wake up inside the skyline you came to see.

Location and getting around: the towers stand on Highland Park hill above the Old City, so the setting is dramatic but steep. The Old City walls and the seafront Boulevard are below and reachable by a downhill walk or a short taxi ride, and the funicular links the hill and the waterfront. Expect to use a taxi or a ride-hailing app for the Heydar Aliyev Center and for the airport, which is a drive of roughly half an hour depending on traffic. Coming back up the hill on foot after dinner is not recommended.

The rooms: the standard categories are the Deluxe rooms in king or twin layouts with city or sea views, and the Caspian Suite and Fairmont Gold suites sit above them. Pay a little more for a sea view if you want the bay and the evening lights, since the Flame Towers glow after dark and the view from inside the tower is of the city rather than the towers themselves. The serviced apartments suit longer stays and families who want more room.

Who it suits: couples, honeymooners and business travellers who want a polished international hotel with a spa and a rooftop pool. Families are welcome and the space helps, though the hilltop location means more taxis. What to know: check whether breakfast is in your rate, restaurant and bar reservations are advised at busy times, and rooms with sea views book first. Rates sit at the top of the Baku market and rise during Formula One weekend and major conferences.
