Mount Batur is the most popular hike in Bali and one of the best-value adventures on the island: an active volcano rising from the floor of an enormous, ancient caldera in the Kintamani highlands of Bangli, with a crescent-shaped crater lake at its foot and the great cone of Mount Agung, Bali's highest and holiest mountain, on the eastern horizon. The summit stands at about 1,717 metres, and the classic way to see it is at sunrise. You are collected from your hotel in the small hours, driven up to the trailhead villages at the base of the mountain, and set off by torchlight around four in the morning with a licensed local guide, joining a long line of head-torches snaking up the slope. The trail starts through farmland and forest, then climbs steeply over loose volcanic sand and black lava rock; most reasonably fit walkers reach the rim in around two hours. As the sky lightens, the view unfolds: Lake Batur below, the caldera walls, Agung and on clear mornings Mount Abang and even Rinjani on Lombok across the sea. Guides often prepare breakfast at the summit, including eggs or bananas cooked in the steam vents that still hiss from the rock, a reminder that Batur is very much alive; its most recent eruptions were in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, and the black lava fields from earlier flows still scar its flanks. After sunrise you can walk part of the crater rim, meet the long-tailed macaques that hang around the summit warungs, and descend in daylight. The Batur caldera is the centrepiece of a UNESCO Global Geopark, and the mountain is sacred to the Balinese, so treat it with respect.

Rules and guides: in practice you must climb with a local guide arranged through the trekking association at the trailhead, which enforces the rule; independent hikers without a guide can be turned away. Most visitors book an all-in tour with hotel pickup, guide, entry fee and breakfast, which is far simpler than arranging a guide on the spot. The Tiqets venue page lists several options, including a sunrise trek with breakfast at the summit whose itinerary starts with a hotel pickup around two in the morning, reaches the crater for sunrise and returns around midday after a coffee plantation stop, and a version that ends with a soak in the natural hot springs on the lakeshore. There are also sunrise jeep tours that drive to a viewpoint on the lower slopes, for those who cannot or do not want to climb. Despite occasional rumours, a 2023 proposal to restrict climbing on Bali's sacred mountains did not become law, and Batur remains open to guided hikers.

Fitness and kit: the trek is moderate but steep, with slippery volcanic gravel especially on the descent. Wear proper trainers or hiking shoes, not sandals; bring a head torch if your guide does not supply one, a warm layer and a rain jacket, because the summit is cold and windy before dawn, plus water and some cash for drinks at the summit stalls. Walking poles help on the way down.

Wet-season reality: from November to March the chance of cloud at sunrise is higher, and trails can be muddy after overnight rain; some mornings you will climb into fog and see little. Go anyway if your dates are fixed, but keep a back-up day in your plan, check the alert level for Batur and Agung with your operator, and remember that operators may cancel in bad weather. Be respectful at the summit: there are small shrines, and antics such as nude photographs have caused real offence and led to ceremonies to cleanse the mountain.
