Dubai (United Arab Emirates)

Dubai

Dubai is the city that built a skyline out of the desert in a single generation, and it is far easier to do well than its reputation for excess suggests: a driverless metro, winter sunshine when Europe is grey, beaches inside the city limits and a run of record-breaking sights that are genuinely worth the hype.

The Burj Khalifa still holds the title of the tallest building on earth, with observation decks stacked from Level 124 to a lounge at 585 meters, and at its feet the Dubai Fountain dances on the lake every half-hour after dark. The Dubai Frame frames old town and new, the Palm Jumeirah spreads out below The View, Atlantis keeps the biggest waterpark in the region, and the desert begins less than an hour from the hotels, with dune drives, camels and dinner under the stars. This guide books the city properly, from sunset slots on the Burj and timed abra crossings of the Creek to the cool-season calendar of Global Village and the Miracle Garden, and pairs it with the older Dubai visitors too often miss: the wind-tower lanes of Al Fahidi, the spice and gold souks of Deira, a guided morning inside the Jumeirah Mosque and a day trip to Abu Dhabi for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Louvre. Then it matches you to the right hotel, from fountain-view suites in Downtown and resort life on the Palm to smart budget bases by the Mall and the Marina, because in a city this spread out, where you sleep decides how you spend your days.

Things to do in Dubai

Burj Khalifa At the Top

The tallest building on earth and the view that defines Dubai: open-air terraces on Levels 124 and 125, the quieter SKY deck on 148, and a lounge at 585 meters for the splurge. Book a sunset slot, then watch the fountain from above.

Dubai Mall and the Dubai Fountain

The free show that stops Downtown every half-hour after dark: jets of water choreographed to music on the lake below the Burj Khalifa, with the mall, Souk Al Bahar and the boardwalk as your grandstand. Come hungry and stay for two shows.

2-3 hours (evening)Details →

Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo

A wall of ocean inside the Dubai Mall: sharks and rays gliding past a giant acrylic panel, a walk-through tunnel beneath them, and an Underwater Zoo upstairs with penguins and otters. The easiest family win in Downtown.

1-2 hours$$Tickets →

Dubai Frame

A golden picture frame 150 meters tall in Zabeel Park, with old Dubai on one side and the new skyline on the other, a glass-floored sky bridge across the top and a gallery that imagines the city's future. Good value and great photos.

Dubai Desert Safari

Red dunes less than an hour from the towers: a 4x4 roller-coaster over the sand, camels and sandboarding at sunset, then dinner in a desert camp under the stars. Choose your operator carefully and it is the best evening of the trip.

6 hours (evening)$$Tickets →

Palm Jumeirah and The View at The Palm

The only way to see the Palm as a palm: an open-air deck 240 meters up on The Palm Tower, looking down the trunk to Atlantis with the fronds and the Gulf spread out below. Add a monorail ride and a beach club and you have the island in a day.

1 hour (plus the island)$$Tickets →

Aquaventure World at Atlantis

The record-breaking waterpark at the tip of the Palm: towers of slides including a near-vertical drop through a shark lagoon, a long river with rapids, a private beach and a huge aquarium next door. A full day out for families and thrill-seekers.

Full day$$$Tickets →

Dubai Marina Dhow Dinner Cruise

A slow evening on a wooden dhow through a canyon of lit-up towers, past JBR and out toward Ain Dubai and the Palm, with a buffet dinner on deck. Touristy, yes, but the Marina at night from the water is a genuinely beautiful sight.

1-2 hours$$Tickets →

Global Village

The world in one giant open-air fair: country pavilions full of food and crafts, street-food stalls from everywhere, rides, stunts and fireworks. Open only in the cool season, from mid-October 2026 into May 2027, evenings only.

3-4 hours (evening)$Tickets →

Dubai Miracle Garden

A flower garden in the desert on a ridiculous scale: a full-size Emirates A380 covered in blooms, heart-shaped tunnels, floral castles and millions of petunias. Season 15 opened in October 2026. Kitsch, colourful and very photogenic.

2-3 hours$$Tickets →

Jumeirah Mosque

The most beautiful mosque in Dubai and one of the few open to non-Muslim visitors, on guided tours that end with an honest, open question-and-answer session about Islam and Emirati life. One of the most rewarding hours in the city.
