Padang Padang is the most famous of the cliff-backed coves along the western side of the Bukit peninsula near Uluwatu, and when the light and the tide are right, it is one of the prettiest beaches in Bali. The beach is small and hidden behind a narrow gap in the limestone cliffs. From the road, a staircase leads down past the ticket booth and squeezes through a cave in the rock before opening onto a sheltered crescent of pale sand, framed by cliffs and boulders, with clear blue water and a reef just offshore. That reef produces one of the best-known waves in surfing: a powerful left-hand barrel that breaks over shallow coral and is reserved for experienced surfers when it is working, mainly in the dry season from about May to October. The break has hosted major surf contests, and on big days the beach fills with surfers and spectators watching from the rocks. A gentler right-hander inside the bay suits intermediate surfers. For swimmers, the inner bay is calmest at mid to high tide when the swell is small; at low tide the reef is exposed, which makes for interesting rock pools but poor swimming. The beach also found a wider audience as a filming location for Eat Pray Love. Padang Padang lies roughly halfway between Bingin and Suluban beaches, and the stretch of coast in between is full of cliff-top warungs, surf shacks, boutique stays and beach clubs, making it easy to combine with sunset at Uluwatu Temple. There is a small entrance fee, and long-tailed macaques on the stairs are quick to snatch anything loose, so keep bags zipped and food out of sight.
When to go: early morning is the best time for a quiet beach and soft light before tour groups and day-trippers arrive; late afternoon brings golden light but more people. Check the tide and the surf forecast before you go: mid to high tide with small swell is ideal for swimming, while big swell days are for watching expert surfers, not for paddling. The cove is small, and by midday in peak season it can feel crowded, so arrive early or visit on a weekday.
Practicalities: there is a car and scooter park across the road from the entrance with a small daily charge. Bring water, sunscreen and cash; small stalls sell drinks and snacks on the sand, and sun loungers and umbrellas are sometimes available to rent. Wear sandals for the stairs and the rocks. There are no lifeguards on many Bukit beaches, and currents near the reef can be strong, so swim inside the bay and only in calm conditions. In the wet season, the west coast can be affected by rubbish washed ashore by onshore winds, though the Bukit beaches are generally cleaner than those further north.
Around Padang Padang: Bingin, a short ride north, is reached by steep steps through a cliff village and has excellent sunset spots; Suluban, near the main Uluwatu surf break, has its own cave entrance. Combine a morning at Padang Padang with lunch on the cliffs, a visit to Garuda Wisnu Kencana or an afternoon at your hotel pool, and finish with the Kecak dance at Uluwatu Temple.
