The south-west coast of Bali is one long, continuous beach of dark sand facing the Indian Ocean, running from Kuta and Legian in the south through Seminyak and on to Berawa, Batu Bolong, Echo Beach and Pererenan in Canggu. Each stretch has its own personality. Seminyak is the polished one: a district of design hotels, villas, boutiques, spas, restaurants and beach clubs, where the late-afternoon ritual is a drink and a beanbag facing the sunset at Petitenget or Double Six beach. Canggu, further north, grew from a village of rice paddies into the island's creative and digital-nomad hub, a busy, buzzy patchwork of surf shops, cafes, coworking spaces, yoga studios and beach bars squeezed between the remaining fields. The official tourism portal describes its wide black-sand beach as world-famous for its surf, with rice paddies still bordering parts of the shore and sunset watched over grilled corn from beach vendors. The surf is the constant: the waves here are consistent all year, with beginner-friendly beach breaks at Batu Bolong, where surf schools rent boards along the sand, and more powerful reef and point breaks at Echo Beach and Pererenan for experienced surfers. Swimming is a different matter. This coast has strong currents and rips, and lifeguards set out red and yellow flags on the busier beaches: swim only between them, and stay out of the water where red flags fly. Sunset is the main event wherever you are. Bring cash, find a beanbag or a stretch of sand, and watch the surfers silhouetted against the sky; it is one of the simplest and best pleasures in Bali.

Choosing your beach: for families and first-timers who want an easy stroll, Seminyak and Legian have wide, flat sand and plenty of facilities. For learning to surf, Batu Bolong in Canggu is the classic spot, with gentle rolling waves on many days and lessons on the beach. For a quieter sunset with a more local feel, head to Pererenan or Echo Beach, or north toward Seseh and Cemagi. The beaches are free to access; you pay only for loungers, umbrellas, drinks and beach-club minimum spends.

The wet-season catch: from roughly November to March, the prevailing winds and currents wash rubbish, much of it plastic, onto the south-west coast, and some mornings beaches from Kuta to Canggu can look grim until clean-up crews arrive. It varies a lot from day to day and is usually cleared quickly, but if pristine sand matters, consider the east-coast beaches of Sanur and Nusa Dua at this time of year, where the water is also calmer for swimming. Bali has banned many single-use plastics, so bring a refillable bottle and help keep the beaches clean.

Getting around: Canggu and Seminyak are about twenty minutes apart without traffic, but the roads are narrow and often jammed, especially in the late afternoon. Use ride-hailing apps or a driver, or rent a scooter only if you are an experienced rider with a valid licence and helmet, which the provincial rules require. Tanah Lot is around twenty-five minutes beyond Canggu, so a sunset there is easy to add.
