The Mandarin Oriental is the most famous hotel in Thailand and one of the great hotels of the world, and in 2026 it marks 150 years on the banks of the Chao Phraya. It began life in 1876 as a modest hotel for sailors and merchants and grew into the place where writers, royalty and film stars stayed when they came to Bangkok: Joseph Conrad, Somerset Maugham, Noel Coward and James Michener are among the names remembered in the suites of the original colonial building, the Authors' Wing. Today the hotel stretches along the riverfront in that white wing and two later towers, with 271 rooms and 60 suites, most with views over the river. Rooms are elegant in a Thai-colonial way, with teak, silk and orchids, and the service is famously personal, with staff who remember names and preferences from one visit to the next. The dining is a destination in itself. Le Normandie, on the top floor of the River Wing, is one of the most celebrated French restaurants in Asia; Lord Jim's serves seafood with river views; The China House offers Cantonese cuisine in a restored colonial house; and The Verandah and Riverside Terrace are relaxed all-day options. The Authors' Lounge, a white, plant-filled atrium in the original building, serves one of the city's best-loved afternoon teas, and the Bamboo Bar is a legendary jazz and cocktail bar. Across the river, reached by the hotel's own teak shuttle boats, are the Oriental Spa in a traditional Thai house, Sala Rim Naam for Thai dinners with classical dance, and the Oriental Thai Cooking School. There are two outdoor pools and a fitness centre. A five-minute boat ride connects the hotel to Saphan Taksin BTS station.
The history is part of every stay. The Authors' Wing, the only surviving part of the original hotel, holds the famous writer suites, each named after a celebrated guest and decorated in period style; even if you stay elsewhere in the hotel, a walk through its arcades and afternoon tea in the Authors' Lounge are rituals. The hotel has kept a sense of occasion: staff in traditional dress, flowers everywhere, and the evening ritual of watching the river traffic from the terrace as the sun goes down. Its profile has only grown since it appeared as the Bangkok setting of the third season of The White Lotus, and for the 150th anniversary the hotel has planned a year of special experiences and events.
Choosing a room: the Deluxe and Premier rooms in the River Wing and Garden Wing are the core of the hotel, with river or garden views; the River Wing rooms have the classic views up and down the Chao Phraya. Suites range from the famous Authors' suites to large river-view suites with butler service. Families are well looked after, with connecting rooms, a family programme and the shuttle boats, which children love. The spa is one of the most respected in Asia, and a Thai massage in the teak house across the river is worth the splurge.
Who it suits: anyone celebrating, honeymooners, lovers of history and old-world luxury, and travellers who want to be on the river with easy access to the old town by boat. The trade-offs are price, at the very top of the Bangkok market, and a location in the old Bang Rak riverside district rather than the business and shopping districts; Sukhumvit and Siam are a Skytrain ride away. If it is beyond the budget, come for afternoon tea or a drink at the Bamboo Bar instead; it is one of the essential Bangkok experiences.

Good Questions

Can non-guests visit for afternoon tea or drinks?
Yes. Afternoon tea in the Authors' Lounge and drinks at the Bamboo Bar are open to non-guests, but booking ahead is wise, especially at weekends. Smart casual dress is expected.
How do I get to the old town from the hotel?
Take the hotel boat to Sathorn pier, then the Chao Phraya tourist boat or express boat upriver to Tha Tien or Tha Chang for Wat Pho and the Grand Palace. Saphan Taksin BTS is beside Sathorn pier.
