The Peninsula Bangkok is the polished, spacious alternative to the historic hotels across the river, and for many travellers it is the most comfortable luxury stay in the city. It opened in 1998 in a striking W-shaped tower on the Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya, almost directly opposite the Mandarin Oriental and the Shangri-La, and the shape was designed so that every room has a view of the river. Rooms are generous by Bangkok standards and blend Thai design touches, such as silk and teak, with the brand's thoughtful technology: bedside tablets control the lights, curtains and temperature, and there are dressing areas and deep bathtubs. Higher floors look across the city skyline, and the night view of the illuminated bridges and boats is memorable. The grounds are the other draw: a three-tiered outdoor pool, one of the longest in the city, set in tropical gardens at the edge of the river, with private cabanas. The Peninsula Spa, in a colonial-style building in the gardens, is excellent. Dining spans Cantonese cuisine at Mei Jiang, Thai dishes in a traditional riverside pavilion at Thiptara, all-day dining at River Cafe and Terrace, and the hotel's celebrated afternoon tea in the Lobby, served with Thai-inspired touches. The hotel's shuttle boats run frequently across the river to Sathorn pier and Saphan Taksin BTS station, and to the river boats that serve the old town, so the Thonburi location is less isolated than it looks. Service is warm, precise and multilingual, and the family facilities are strong, including children's amenities and connecting rooms.
What sets the Peninsula apart is the combination of calm and convenience. On the Thonburi side, there is no traffic noise, no street-level bustle and a sense of retreat, yet the Skytrain is a five-minute boat ride away and the temples of the old town are a short ride upriver. The river views are the defining feature: from every room you watch rice barges, express boats and longtails pass below, and at night the city lights reflect in the water. Book a higher floor for the widest views, or a Deluxe Balcony Room for an outdoor seat over the river.
The pool deserves its reputation. Three tiers run down towards the river through palm gardens, with cabanas and attentive staff bringing iced towels and fruit through the heat of the day. It is the best place in Bangkok to recover after a morning in the temples, and it makes the hotel particularly good for families. The spa offers Thai and Ayurvedic-inspired treatments in a quiet colonial house, and the gym is well equipped. The Peninsula Academy runs cultural experiences, such as Thai cooking classes and river trips, for guests who want to go deeper.
Who it suits: couples and families who want a resort-like riverside base in the city, travellers who value space and a quiet night, and anyone who loves a big hotel pool. The trade-offs are the reliance on the shuttle boats, which stop late at night (taxis are the backup), and a location with few restaurants within walking distance, though ICONSIAM, with its food halls and shops, is a short ride along the riverbank. Rates are high, but sit below the very top of the market and often include more space than equivalent rooms elsewhere.

Good Questions
Does every room at the Peninsula Bangkok have a river view?
Yes. The tower was designed so that every room faces the Chao Phraya. Higher floors and balcony rooms have the best views.
Is the Thonburi location inconvenient?
Not really. The hotel's shuttle boats cross the river to Sathorn pier and Saphan Taksin BTS station in a few minutes, and river boats from there serve the old town. Late at night, a taxi is the backup.
Is the Peninsula Bangkok good for families?
Very good. The three-tiered pool, spacious rooms, connecting options, children's amenities and the novelty of the shuttle boats make it one of the best family hotels in the city.
