★★★★★

Accra Beach Hotel and Spa is a three-and-a-half-acre resort on Rockley Beach in Christ Church, on the south coast, and it is the kind of hotel that works for almost everyone. It has two hundred and twenty-four rooms and suites, most with private balconies facing the island, the pool or the ocean, and the Ocean-view suites add a personal Jacuzzi tub. The beach is ranked by the hotel as one of the best on the island, and the surroundings are busy with shops, restaurants and entertainment, so you are never short of things to do on foot.

Location and getting around: Accra sits about four kilometres from Bridgetown and about ten kilometres from the airport, which keeps transfers short and cheap. The south coast is the island's most sociable stretch, with St Lawrence Gap's restaurants and bars a short taxi or bus ride away, and the Garrison, the UNESCO site and Oistins's Friday fish fry both within easy reach. The main road outside has regular buses, so you can explore without a car, and tour operators pick up here for Harrison's Cave, rum tours and cruises.

The rooms and facilities: the guestrooms are contemporary, with complimentary WiFi, coffeemakers, mini-fridges, room service, safes, kettles and flat-screen TVs. The property has an outdoor pool with a swim-up bar, a separate adults-only pool and a children's pool, a full-service spa called Chakra Spa and three restaurants serving international cuisine. Weekly entertainment includes karaoke, limbo dancing, floor shows and live music, so the atmosphere leans lively rather than hushed.

Who it suits and what to know: families, groups of friends and couples who want a social base with plenty of facilities, and travellers who want to be near the action without paying west-coast luxury rates. If you want absolute calm, ask for a room away from the entertainment areas and the main road. The south coast has more surf and wind than the west, so the sea can be livelier for swimming. Ask whether breakfast is included in your rate, and look for packages that bundle meals with spa credits.
