Bratislava Old Town

Palaces, statues and wine bars in a car-free centre

Bratislava’s old town is small enough to walk end to end in twenty minutes, and that is its charm. Start at Michael’s Gate, the only surviving gate of the medieval walls, whose tower holds a small museum of weapons and a viewing gallery. Michalská street runs south past cafes and Baroque palaces to Main Square, where the Old Town Hall, home of the Bratislava City Museum, faces the Roland Fountain. Next door is the pink Primate’s Palace, and a few steps away lies Hviezdoslav Square, a long tree-lined promenade ending at the historic Slovak National Theatre. Along the way, look out for the bronze statues that have become the city’s mascots, above all Čumil, the workman peering out of a manhole. The lanes are lined with wine bars and cafes, and in the run-up to Christmas Main Square and Hviezdoslav Square fill with market stalls. This page links to a Tiqets city quest, a self-guided puzzle game through the old town.

How to see it: walk from Michael’s Gate down to Main Square, detour to Primate’s Square, then follow Hviezdoslav Square toward the river and back up to St Martin’s Cathedral. The Old Town Hall and Apponyi Palace are open Tuesday to Sunday all year, and Michael’s Tower opens every day except Tuesday.

What to expect: the City Quest starts at Františkánske námestie, beside Main Square, and sends groups of up to six around checkpoints with puzzles and clues. Allow about three hours. Note that it is non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled.

Making the most of it: come early for quiet lanes and good photos, then return in the evening, when the wine bars and terraces are at their liveliest.
