Devín Castle is the most atmospheric sight in Bratislava, and it is not in the centre at all. About ten kilometres west of the old town, its ruined walls and the slender Maiden Tower perch on a crag above the point where the Morava meets the Danube, with Austria directly across the water. The rock has been settled since prehistory, served the Romans and became a major stronghold of Great Moravia in the ninth century, which is why it holds such a place in Slovak national identity. Napoleon’s troops blew it up in 1809, and it has been a romantic ruin ever since. Today it is run by the Bratislava City Museum, with exhibitions on the castle’s past, archaeological finds and paths that climb to the upper castle for views across two rivers and two countries. Below, on the riverbank, the Gate of Freedom memorial remembers people killed trying to cross the Iron Curtain here. The link goes to the castle’s official website for current hours and tickets.
How to visit: a city bus from the Most SNP stop beneath the UFO bridge reaches Devín village in about half an hour, then it is a short walk to the gate. Cyclists can follow the riverside path, and in the warmer months boats sail upriver from the centre. Allow two to three hours on site.
What to expect: in winter, from November to March, the castle keeps shorter hours and closes in the mid-afternoon, and the grounds can close without notice when paths are icy or snowy. Check the official site before you set out. Paths are steep and uneven, so wear proper shoes.
Making the most of it: walk down to the confluence and the Gate of Freedom after your visit, and stay for the evening light on the cliffs, which is spectacular.
