Brisbane & Gold Coast guide

Where to Stay in Brisbane and the Gold Coast

Which part of Brisbane or the Gold Coast to base yourself in: the CBD, South Bank, James Street, Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach, with a hotel pick for each.

The best base depends on whether your trip leans toward the river city or the beach. Brisbane puts you close to South Bank, the Story Bridge and the ferries, while the Gold Coast puts you beside the sand and a short ride from the theme parks. Many visitors split their stay, and that is worth considering because the drive between the two takes an hour or more.

Brisbane CBD: the value base

The city centre is compact and walkable, with Queen Street Mall, the Botanic Gardens, buses, trains and ferries all within reach. The ibis Styles Brisbane Elizabeth Street is our budget pick, at 40 Elizabeth Street, about fifty metres from the mall and a short walk to the river. Rooms are compact, so choose a higher category if you want space. It is ideal for short stays and for tours that pick up in the CBD, such as the hinterland and Moreton Island trips.

South Bank: sightseeing and families

Staying here puts you beside the parklands, Streets Beach, the cultural precinct and the ferry terminal. The Emporium Hotel South Bank is an all-suite hotel of 143 suites at 267 Grey Street, with a rooftop infinity pool, a spa and several restaurants. It suits couples, families who want space and anyone who plans to walk rather than drive.

James Street and Fortitude Valley: stylish and food-led

North of the centre, James Street is a polished precinct of restaurants and boutiques. The Calile Hotel is the splurge pick, with 175 rooms around a resort-style pool and a string of restaurants. It is best for couples and special occasions, and it has a station about ten minutes on foot, though you will use rideshare or ferries for most sights.

Surfers Paradise: the classic beach base

Surfers is the busy heart of the Gold Coast, with the beach, the light rail, nightlife and the SkyPoint tower within walking distance. QT Gold Coast sits about fifty metres from the beach, with ocean-view rooms, a heated pool, a spa and Japanese dining. Ask for a higher floor if you prefer quiet. It is a good fit for couples and friends, and for families who want the beach outside the front door.

Broadbeach: quieter and family friendly

A few stops down the light rail, Broadbeach is more relaxed, with Oracle Boulevard restaurants and the convention centre nearby. Peppers Broadbeach offers one- and two-bedroom suites and three-bedroom sky homes with kitchens, a resort pool and spa. It is the practical choice for families and groups, and a comfortable base for the theme parks, which are a drive of roughly twenty to forty minutes.

How to choose

If you have four nights or fewer, pick one base and use day tours. With a week, split it: three nights in Brisbane at South Bank or the CBD, then three or four on the coast. Check parking charges if you are renting a car, as most hotels here charge a daily fee. Book early for school holidays and event weekends, when rates rise across the region.
