The first rule of staying in Bruges is simple: stay inside the ring of canals that encloses the old town. Everything there is walkable, and the magic of the city comes after the day-trippers leave, when the streets go quiet and the canals are lit. The choice is about atmosphere, budget and whether you are bringing a car, because the medieval centre has limited car access and parking matters. Hotels are mostly small, so book early for weekends, spring and the Christmas market weeks.
Around the Markt: for first-timers
Staying near the Markt puts the Belfry, the Historium and the Burg on your doorstep, which is perfect for a short first visit. The downsides are crowds by day, higher prices and some noise from the square, so ask for a room at the back. Our featured pick is Hotel Heritage, a Relais and Châteaux mansion about fifty metres from the Markt, with a Sothys spa and a fitness room under twelfth-century vaults. A few minutes away on Sint-Jakobsstraat, Hotel Navarra is the best all-round mid-range choice, with a pool, a sauna, a garden bar and its own car park.
Prinsenhof: for a grand splurge
West of the Markt, the streets around the old court of the dukes of Burgundy are calmer, with the shopping streets and the Concertgebouw nearby. This is where you find Dukes’ Palace, a five-star hotel in the fifteenth-century Prinsenhof, with heritage suites, a spa with sauna and hammam and Restaurant Manuscript. The Markt is five to ten minutes away on foot.
Sint-Gillis and the Langerei: for romance and quiet
North of the Markt, the canals of Sint-Gillis and the Langerei feel like a different city: residential, peaceful and beautiful at dusk, with Jan van Eyck Square close by. Canal View Hotel Ter Brughe sits right on the water here, with canal-view rooms and breakfast room, and the Markt is about six minutes away. It suits couples and repeat visitors who want calm.
Katelijnestraat and the Beguinage: for value and easy arrivals
The southern part of the centre, around Katelijnestraat, the Beguinage and the Minnewater, is the closest to the station, and De Halve Maan brewery and the Church of Our Lady are nearby. The ibis Styles Brugge Centrum is our budget pick, with 140 rooms, a public car park underneath and the Beguinage five minutes away on foot.
Matching base to trip
For a romantic weekend, choose Hotel Heritage or Ter Brughe. For a once-in-a-lifetime splurge, Dukes’ Palace. For a family trip, or if you are driving and want a pool, Hotel Navarra. For a tight budget or a train arrival, the ibis Styles.
Practical tips
Check whether breakfast is included, because it adds up. Reserve parking with your room if you drive, as spaces are limited everywhere in the centre. In December, rooms near the Markt book up fast, so reserve months ahead or look a little further out, still inside the canal ring. Rooms facing courtyards or gardens are always the quietest.
Arriving by car or train
If you drive, aim for a hotel with its own or adjoining parking, such as Hotel Navarra or the ibis Styles, or use the large car park by the station and take a bus into the centre. If you come by train, the Katelijnestraat area is the easiest walk with luggage, and a taxi from the station forecourt is quick and inexpensive for hotels further north.
