Kuranda Scenic Railway

A heritage train through tunnels, waterfalls and gorge to Kuranda

The Kuranda Scenic Railway has been winding up the range from Cairns to the rainforest village of Kuranda for well over a century, and it remains one of the great train rides in Queensland. The line was built by hand in the 1880s and 1890s through steep, jungle-covered country, and the journey of about an hour and a half passes through tunnels, over bridges and along ledges above the Barron Gorge. Highlights include the views across to Stoney Creek Falls and Barron Falls, the Red Bluff lookout and the glimpses of the gorge between the trees. Carriages are vintage in style, with wooden-panelled interiors and large windows, and a guard gives commentary along the way. At the top, Kuranda is a small village of markets, cafes, a butterfly sanctuary, a bird aviary and wildlife parks. Visitors can ride one way and return by Skyrail, or take the train both ways. Seats are limited and the best side for views depends on direction, so choose your ticket class and day with care.

Go with a plan. The classic loop is the train up and Skyrail down, or the reverse; the two take roughly three to four hours with transfers and time in the village. The Tiqets ticket page lists one-way and roundtrip tickets, plus combined options with Skyrail, a full-day tour from Cairns and a self-drive experience, so you can choose between independence and a guided day. Cairns station is in the Cairns Central shopping centre, easy to reach on foot from the city and many hotels.

Seating matters. Sit on the left side going up for the views down into the gorge and the best waterfall outlook, and check with the operator which carriages and classes offer the widest windows and the most space. Travel earlier in the day to give yourself more time in Kuranda, and avoid arriving at the busiest market hours if you prefer calm.

Weather matters too. The wet season from roughly December to April brings heavy rain and the occasional disruption, but also full waterfalls and a misty, dramatic rainforest. The dry months are clearer and more reliable. Take a light jacket, a hat, water and a camera. At Kuranda, allow time for the markets and one wildlife sanctuary rather than trying to see everything, and keep an eye on your return departure so you do not miss the last service back.
