Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square

The original treasure house of the pharaohs

For more than a century the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square was the place to see ancient Egypt, and it remains one of the world’s great collections even after the Tutankhamun treasures and the royal mummies moved to newer homes. The neoclassical building opened in 1902 and still feels like an old-school treasure house, with crowded cases and towering statues. Look for the Narmer Palette, a record of the unification of Egypt, the seated statue of Khafre, the triads of Menkaure, the lifelike painted statues of Rahotep and Nofret, and the strange, elongated art of the Amarna period. The tomb goods of Yuya and Tjuyu, the great-grandparents of Tutankhamun, are among the finest anywhere. It is central, easy to reach and pleasantly quieter than it used to be.

How it works: the museum is open daily from morning to late afternoon, with tickets sold for entry and some special rooms charged extra. It sits on the north side of Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo, a short walk from several hotels.

What to expect: labels are old and sometimes sparse, and the building can be warm, so a guide or audio companion adds a lot. In return you get rooms that feel like a cabinet of wonders.

Making the most of it: go after the GEM rather than before, so the Old Kingdom and Amarna pieces fill in the story. Two to three hours is enough, then walk on to the Nile Corniche or downtown cafés.
