Uçhisar Castle

The rock fortress with the best view in Cappadocia

Uçhisar Castle is not a castle in the European sense but a colossal outcrop of volcanic rock, hollowed out over centuries into hundreds of rooms, passages and cisterns, that towers over the village of Uçhisar and can be seen from almost everywhere in the region. Its strategic height made it a natural fortress and watchtower, and for generations people lived inside it and in the cave houses clustered around its base. Today the interior rooms are mostly closed and partly eroded, but a path, steps and rock-cut stairs lead visitors up to the summit terrace, from where the whole landscape of central Cappadocia spreads out below: the white, wind-carved cliffs of Pigeon Valley running down toward Göreme, the fairy chimneys of the Love Valley and the Rose Valley to the north, the town of Nevşehir to the west, and on a clear day the snow-capped volcano of Mount Erciyes far to the east. It is the best single viewpoint in the region for understanding its geography, and it is especially lovely in the late afternoon and at sunset, when the cliffs turn gold and pink. The castle is run locally, there is a small entrance fee, and the climb takes about fifteen minutes from the gate. The streets of the village below have been restored, with some of the region's smartest cave hotels, cafés with terraces and souvenir shops. The national tourism portal, GoTürkiye, lists Uçhisar among the top sights of Cappadocia, and the castle remains one of the most visited places in the region.

Making the climb: the path to the top is short but steep, with uneven rock steps and some narrow sections, and the summit terrace has railings in the main places but not everywhere. Wear shoes with good grip, keep children close and avoid the top in strong winds or icy conditions in winter. The views are excellent at any time of day, but morning light is clear and calm, while sunset brings the best colour and the biggest crowds. Pay the modest fee at the gate; opening hours vary by season, so check on arrival or with your hotel.

Around the castle: Uçhisar sits at the head of Pigeon Valley, named for the thousands of dovecotes carved into its walls, where farmers once collected pigeon droppings to fertilise vineyards and orchards. A marked trail runs from just below the village down the valley to Göreme in about an hour and a half, mostly downhill, and is one of the easiest and most beautiful walks in the region. Near the castle there are viewpoints over the valley with the famous trees hung with blue evil-eye charms, which make a fun photograph. In the village, restored stone mansions now house boutique hotels and restaurants with panoramic terraces.

Getting there and timing: Uçhisar is about ten minutes by car or taxi from Göreme, and local buses between Nevşehir and Göreme stop nearby. Many visitors come for sunset, then stay for dinner in the village. If you are staying at a hotel in Uçhisar, climb the castle at sunrise to watch the balloons rise over Göreme, a quieter alternative to the crowded viewpoints above the village. Combine it with Pigeon Valley and Göreme for a half day, or with the Derinkuyu underground city on the road south.
