★★★★★

Sultan Cave Suites is the hotel whose photographs you have probably already seen: rugs, cushions and lanterns spread across stepped terraces above Göreme, with dozens of balloons drifting just beyond them at sunrise. It is terraced into the hillside of the Aydınlı neighbourhood above the village, and its terraces look across Göreme's fairy chimneys and rooftops to the valleys where the balloons rise, so on a flying morning the view from your breakfast table is the show. The hotel is part of the Kelebek Group of family-run Göreme hotels and travel services, and it shares the group's attention to restoration and detail. Rooms are spread across restored cave houses and fairy chimneys, in categories ranging from classic and junior rooms to king, family, fairy-chimney, Pasha and Sultan suites, with vaulted stone ceilings, carved niches, Turkish rugs and modern bathrooms; some have hot tubs or private terraces. The hotel's Seten Restaurant, open since 2010 and listed in the Michelin Guide 2026, serves Anatolian cooking with views over Göreme, and it is one of the village's best places for dinner even if you are not staying. Expedia lists a free breakfast buffet and free self-parking, and the hotel arranges balloon flights, tours and activities through its group. The centre of Göreme, with its restaurants, tour agencies and bus station, is a short walk downhill, and the Göreme Open-Air Museum is within walking distance.

Location and getting around: Aydınlı is the hillside district on the eastern side of Göreme, above the village centre, and the walk down to the main street takes only a few minutes; the walk back up is steep but short. Göreme is the region's busiest hub, which means tour pickups, taxis and buses to Nevşehir, Uçhisar, Avanos and Ürgüp are all close at hand, and balloon and tour operators collect from the hotel. The Göreme Open-Air Museum is about a twenty-minute walk, and the trails into the Rose, Red and Love Valleys start just outside the village.

Rooms and who it suits: the hotel suits couples and first-time visitors who want the classic Cappadocia view and are happy to be in the heart of things. The terraces are the main event, and on balloon mornings they are busy with photographers, especially those with dresses and props for the perfect picture; if you want a quieter experience, go up early. Rooms vary in size and light, as is normal in cave hotels, so check the category description and ask for a room with a terrace or view if that matters. Expect stairs throughout.

Good to know: the terraces get busy, and rules on photography and props can apply, so ask the hotel what is allowed. Book dinner at Seten at least once, ideally on a clear evening. In November, the terraces can be cold at sunrise, so take a warm layer and the blankets on offer. As with every Cappadocia hotel, balloon flights are weather-dependent, so plan at least two nights to give yourself the best chance of a flying morning.
