InterContinental Presidente Cozumel Resort and Spa

★★★★★

The Presidente InterContinental is the island's splurge. It sits on Carretera a Chankanaab at about kilometre 6.5, on a private white-sand beach facing the Cozumel Reefs National Park, so the reef is practically at the front door. Expedia lists 221 rooms and suites in several categories, from classic rooms of about 344 square feet to premium rooms with balconies or outdoor showers and large junior suites, and the property was fully renovated in September 2023. The resort has two outdoor pools including a signature infinity pool, a protected lagoon for easy snorkeling, free bicycle rentals and a PADI dive operation on site, which makes it a natural base for divers and snorkelers. Dining is on site too, with an Italian trattoria, a Caribbean restaurant, a seafood and steak spot and a beach club, plus two bars and lounges.

Location and getting around: the resort is on the quieter southern coast, about a half-hour drive from the airport and a short ride from Chankanaab Park, which is about four minutes away by car. You are not within walking distance of downtown San Miguel, so plan on taxis or a rental for restaurants and the plaza, and note that most of your time will happen on site. That suits couples and divers who want the reef and the beach on their doorstep, and it is less ideal if you want to stroll to dinner in town every night.

The rooms and the grounds: rooms are spread through low buildings in landscaped gardens by the water. Premium categories include ocean, beach or pool-access options, balconies and outdoor showers, while junior suites go up to around 1,300 square feet, and there is a two-bedroom suite for families and groups. Accessible rooms are available. The beach has a protected lagoon with calm snorkeling, and the on-site dive shop can arrange boat dives and certification courses. The Ikal Spa offers massages, facials and a temazcal, a steam-bath ritual, with reservations needed for treatments.

Good to know: Expedia lists buffet breakfast as an extra cost, so budget for it or choose a package. Rates are at the top of the island's range and rise in winter holidays. The resort sits within a national park area, so expect rules on sunscreen and reef etiquette. Book early for December to April, and consider combining a stay here with a day tour to San Gervasio and Punta Sur.
