If you add one day outside Dubai, make it Abu Dhabi. The UAE capital is about an hour and a half away by road, and it holds two sights that alone justify the trip. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the largest and most beautiful mosques in the world: a vast white marble complex with more than eighty domes, four minarets, reflecting pools, a courtyard inlaid with floral marble and a prayer hall with a famous hand-knotted carpet and crystal chandeliers. Unlike the Jumeirah Mosque it is open to visitors daily outside prayer times, and since September 2026 it charges a small entry fee, around ten dirhams for tourists and a little less when you come with a tour operator, with free entry for over-sixties; free guided tours run several times a day. Dress rules are strict, and the mosque no longer lends abayas, so come covered: loose clothing to the wrists and ankles for women with hair covered, long trousers for men. The Louvre Abu Dhabi, on Saadiyat Island, is the other essential. Jean Nouvel's museum sits beneath a vast latticed dome that seems to float over the water and scatters a rain of light on the galleries below, and inside it tells the story of humanity through objects from every civilisation, with loans from the great French museums alongside its own collection. Adult tickets are around sixty-five dirhams, under-eighteens are free, and it is closed on Mondays. A guided day tour from Dubai covers both, often adding Qasr Al Watan, the presidential palace, and a drive along the Corniche.

There are three ways to do the day. A guided coach or small-group tour is the easiest: hotel pick-up in the morning, the Grand Mosque with entry arranged, lunch, then the Louvre or Qasr Al Watan, and back in Dubai by evening. It removes all the logistics and is the best option for first-timers. A private driver gives flexibility at a higher price. And since 30 September 2026 there is a new option: Etihad Rail's passenger trains run between Al Yalayis station in southern Dubai, next to the Jumeirah Golf Estates metro station on the Red Line, and Mohammed Bin Zayed City station in Abu Dhabi in about an hour, with fares from around forty dirhams in Comfort class. Services were limited to a handful of trains a day each way at launch, and the Abu Dhabi station is on the mainland, so you will need a taxi or bus to the mosque and the Louvre; check the timetable before you plan around it.

Sequence the day around the light and the rules. The Grand Mosque is open from morning to evening every day, with a long midday closure on Fridays for prayers; it is at its most beautiful in the late afternoon, when the marble turns gold, and at dusk, when the lighting changes with the phases of the moon. Many tours therefore do the Louvre first and the mosque later. The Louvre is open from Tuesday to Sunday, with later closing from Friday to Sunday; allow two to three hours and do not miss walking out under the dome to the water's edge. Some galleries close temporarily while works are installed, and temporary exhibitions change through the year.

If you have more time, Abu Dhabi rewards it: Qasr Al Watan's gilded halls, the Corniche beaches, the mangroves for kayaking, and on Yas Island the theme parks for families. As a day trip, though, the mosque and the Louvre are the pair to prioritise, and together they show a side of the Emirates that Dubai does not. Carry your passport or ID, start early, and leave the evening for the drive or train back.

What to Expect

The experience
A full day from Dubai: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island and often Qasr Al Watan, by guided tour, private driver or Etihad Rail plus taxis.
Best time
Any day but Monday if you want the Louvre. Late afternoon for the mosque. Avoid the Friday midday prayer closure. Cool months are far more comfortable.
How long
Ten to twelve hours from Dubai.
Tips
Dress for the mosque before you leave, since abayas are no longer lent. Carry ID. Check the Louvre is open and the train timetable if you go by rail. Do the mosque last for golden light.

Good Questions

Yes, since September 2026 visitors pay a small fee, around ten dirhams for tourists and slightly less when arriving with a tour operator. Over-sixties and worshippers are free.

What should we wear?

Women need loose clothing covering arms to the wrists and legs to the ankles, plus a headscarf; men need long trousers. The mosque no longer lends abayas, though they can be bought on site.

Can we get to Abu Dhabi by train?

Yes. Since 30 September 2026 Etihad Rail runs between Al Yalayis station in Dubai and Mohammed Bin Zayed City station in Abu Dhabi in about an hour, with a limited number of trains a day. You will need a taxi from the station.

When is the Louvre Abu Dhabi closed?

On Mondays. It opens from Tuesday to Sunday, with later evening hours from Friday to Sunday. Adult tickets are around sixty-five dirhams and under-eighteens are free.
