Mount Srđ Hiking Trail

Earn the best view in Dubrovnik on foot

The cable car is the quick way up Mount Srđ; walking is the way that makes you feel you have earned the view. The classic route starts from the upper road above the Old Town, where a well-marked path leaves the last houses and zigzags up the bare, rocky south face of the mountain to the summit at around four hundred metres. The path is lined with the Stations of the Cross, which give you a natural set of rest stops, and most reasonably fit walkers reach the top in about an hour. There is almost no shade, the surface is loose stone in places, and in summer the heat reflecting off the rock is intense, so this is a hike for early morning, late afternoon or the cooler months. At the top you reach Fort Imperial, built by the French in the Napoleonic period and now home to the Homeland War Museum, the large cross that looks down on the city, the upper cable car station and its panorama terrace. The Dubrovnik Cable Car also describes a second, easier trail along the summit: from behind Fort Imperial a macadam road, not steep and partly through forest, runs about thirteen hundred metres north-west to Fort Strinčjera, at roughly the same height, with views over the Dubrovnik coast and inland. Together they make a satisfying half-day: hike up, walk the ridge, visit the museum, watch the sunset, and ride the cable car down when it is running.

Preparation matters more than fitness. Wear proper shoes with grip, because the path is rocky and slippery in places, carry plenty of water, and use sun protection. Start early in summer, ideally before nine in the morning, or two to three hours before sunset; avoid the midday hours from June to September. The path is exposed and can be windy at the top. Do not take it in a thunderstorm, and be careful descending after rain. If you are walking with children, they should be used to rough paths.

Plan the descent around the cable car timetable. The cable car runs seasonally with longer hours in summer, does not run in December, January, February or March, and pauses in strong wind or lightning, so in winter or bad weather you will need to walk down the same way, which is harder on the knees than the climb. In season, a one-way cable car ticket down is the most comfortable option. At the summit there is a restaurant and terrace with the best sunset view in the city.

Who should go: active travellers who prefer earning their view, budget travellers, photographers who want different angles on the walls, and anyone who has walked the city walls and wants a bigger picture. It pairs naturally with the Homeland War Museum in Fort Imperial and a sunset drink at the top. If you have limited mobility or time, take the cable car both ways instead; the view is the same.
