Hotel Lapad is the pick for travellers who plan to spend much of their time on boats. It stands on Lapadska obala, the waterfront promenade along the Lapad side of Gruž harbour, looking across the water toward the port where the ferries and catamarans leave for the Elaphiti islands, Mljet and further along the coast. The hotel is family-owned and describes a century-long tradition in hospitality, and it combines an older wing with character and a newer part of the building. Rooms are divided into two wings: the Superior wing, with rooms and junior suites that have double beds and marina or garden views but no balconies, and the Classic wing in the newer part, where rooms have balconies with garden or side sea views, and where there are single rooms and an adapted room for guests with disabilities. The pool is the centre of the hotel in summer, open through the day with free pool towels, and the restaurant serves a buffet breakfast and a buffet dinner, with vegetarian and special-diet options. Wi-Fi is free throughout, and there is limited private parking for a daily fee, which cannot be guaranteed in advance. The hotel puts the Old Town at about three to three and a half kilometres away, which is around forty-five minutes on foot along the water and the Gruž seafront, and local bus number 6 runs into the city. The setting is calm, residential and genuinely local, with the morning market at Gruž and cafes along the waterfront.
The location is the argument. Staying on the Gruž side puts you within walking distance of the ferry and catamaran terminal, so early departures for Mljet, Lopud or Šipan are easy, and the Gruž market and the Red History Museum are nearby. The Lapad peninsula's promenade and beaches are a short walk or bus ride away for swimming days, and you avoid the crowds and prices of the Old Town while still being a quick bus ride from the walls.
The trade-offs: you are not within comfortable walking distance of the Old Town for most people, so plan on buses or taxis, especially in the evening. Superior rooms do not have balconies, so choose the Classic wing if outdoor space matters. The harbour is a working port, and while the view of yachts and ferries is lively, it is not the open-sea panorama of hotels on the cliffs. Parking is limited, and restaurant tables cannot be booked in advance.
Who should stay: island-hoppers and day-trippers who want the ferries on the doorstep, couples and families looking for a calm mid-range base with a pool, and travellers who like staying in a real neighbourhood rather than a tourist zone. It suits stays of three nights or more. If you have only one or two nights and want to be steps from Stradun, stay in or near the Old Town instead.
