First-Timer's Guide to Grenada

What to reserve ahead in Grenada, how to get around the island, how many days you need and how the snorkel trips, waterfalls and chocolate stops fit together.

Grenada is a small, green Caribbean island with a deep-water harbor, a rainforest interior and a coastline of calm bays. Its nickname is the Spice Isle, and nutmeg, cocoa and rum are part of every day here. St. George's is the capital and the cruise port, and many visitors arrive for a single day, so this guide is built to work for a port stop as well as for a week. Carriacou, the island to the north, was hit hard by Hurricane Beryl in July 2024 and is not covered here, so check current conditions before planning a trip there.

What to book ahead

Three things are worth reserving before you arrive. First, the snorkel cruise to the Molinière Underwater Sculpture Park, the island's signature experience, which runs about four hours and includes lunch and drinks. Second, the Seven Sisters waterfalls hike if you want a real walk and a swim, since it is a guided half-day with transport. Third, the sunset schooner cruise if you are staying overnight. River tubing and the clear kayak tour are good extras. Everything else, from Grand Anse Beach to Fort George, can be decided on the day.

Getting around

Grenada has one main road system with steep, narrow stretches, and taxis and tour drivers are the easiest option. Local buses run along the south coast and are cheap, but they do not reach most sights in the interior. If you drive yourself, take your time on the winding roads. For a cruise day, an organized tour or a trusted driver handles timing for you, and you should confirm the all-aboard time before you choose.

How many days

With one day, choose one headline: the snorkel cruise, an island tour that links Annandale Falls, Grand Etang and a chocolate stop, or a beach day at Grand Anse. Three days lets you add the waterfall hike, a walk in St. George's and a visit to Belmont Estate. A week is relaxed and leaves room for a spa day, a dive or a long beach afternoon.

Where the headline sights fit

In the south, Grand Anse Beach is the social heart, with calm water and beach bars. The sculpture park and the clear kayak tour are on the west and south coasts, and both start near the beach areas. In the interior, Annandale Falls is the easy stop, Grand Etang is the crater lake and monkey stop, and Seven Sisters is the hike. Belmont Estate is further north, about an hour from St. George's, and its own website lists it as open Sunday to Friday from 8am to 4pm and closed on Saturdays.

Cruise-day tips

St. George's is walkable from the port, and Fort George is a steep climb above the harbor. Access to the fort varies, so ask locally before you go. Do not stack a long hike with a long drive, and keep a buffer of at least an hour before the ship leaves. Independent tours generally list free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start.

Practical comfort

The sun is strong year round, so bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and water. Wear shoes with grip for the interior trails, which are often muddy, and pack a light rain jacket for Grand Etang. Carry some small cash for tips, drinks and market purchases.

A simple plan

Day one, Grand Anse Beach and a sunset cruise. Day two, the sculpture park snorkel cruise in the morning and St. George's in the afternoon. Day three, an interior day with Annandale Falls, Grand Etang and Seven Sisters, with river tubing as an option. Day four, Belmont Estate and a quiet beach afternoon.
