Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten

Hamburg’s grand dame on the Inner Alster, a five-star institution since 1897 with lake-view rooms, a classic bar, a patisserie and a spa. The splurge for a special occasion.

★★★★★

The Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten is the classic Hamburg luxury hotel. It stands on the Neuer Jungfernstieg, directly on the shore of the Inner Alster, and has been welcoming guests as a grand hotel since 1897. Its 156 rooms and suites are individually decorated in a traditional, polished style, and many of them, including the Lake View rooms, the balcony rooms and the Senator Suite, look straight out over the water to the Jungfernstieg and the spires of the old town. The hotel has a whole collection of restaurants and bars, among them the Jahreszeiten Bar for cocktail classics and a patisserie, and a spa and fitness area on the upper floors.

Location and getting around: you are on the western shore of the Binnenalster, a few minutes on foot from the Jungfernstieg, the Rathaus and the best shopping streets of the city centre. The Jungfernstieg U-Bahn and S-Bahn station is close by, with direct trains to the Landungsbrücken, the main station and the airport line, and the Alster steamers leave from the Jungfernstieg pier. The Kunsthalle is about fifteen minutes away on foot, and the Elbphilharmonie and the Speicherstadt are a short ride.

The rooms and who it suits: rooms range from classic doubles to large suites, and the lake-view categories are worth the extra for the view of the Alster, especially in the evening. The style is traditional rather than modern, with antiques, rich fabrics and attentive, old-school service. It is the right choice for a honeymoon, a milestone birthday or travellers who want a grand hotel experience in the most elegant part of the city.

Good to know: check-in is from 15:00 and check-out at 12:00. Parking is by valet only and expensive, so arriving by train or taxi makes more sense. The fitness area is open around the clock, and the spa offers treatments to book. Rates sit at the top of the Hamburg market, but quieter winter weekends can bring better value.
