Ha Long Bay Day Cruise from Hanoi

Limestone islands, caves and Ti Top Island in a day

Ha Long Bay is the image most people carry of Vietnam: a calm green sea scattered with nearly two thousand limestone islands and islets, their cliffs draped in jungle and their bases cut into caves and arches. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and lies in Quang Ninh province, on the coast east of Hanoi. Many visitors spend a night on a cruise boat, but a well-run day trip shows you the highlights without the cost or the commitment. The Tiqets tour we link is a full-day guided cruise run by SPL Tours, a Hanoi operator. It collects you from your hotel in the Old Quarter, drives you to the harbour, and puts you on a boat that sails past the famous Fighting Cocks rocks, Hon Ga Choi, while lunch is served. The afternoon brings Sung Sot Cave, one of the largest in the bay, and Ti Top Island, where you can swim from a small beach or climb to a viewpoint over the karsts. It is a long day, about twelve hours door to door, but it is the simplest way to see the bay from a Hanoi base.

How it works: the tour starts at about 08:10 with pickup from hotels around the Old Quarter. If you stay elsewhere, you meet the group at 1 Trang Tien, in front of the Hanoi Opera House. An English-speaking guide travels with you, lunch and bottled water are included, and so are the entrance fees for the caves and islands on the itinerary. Kayaking or a bamboo boat ride to Luon Cave, a lagoon enclosed by cliffs, costs extra and is paid on the day. Free cancellation and rescheduling are available until twenty-four hours before the trip, which is useful if the weather turns.

What to expect: the drive from Hanoi to the harbour takes a large part of the morning each way, so think of the day as roughly half road and half sea. Sung Sot, the Surprise Cave, is reached by a stairway up the side of an island and opens into huge chambers filled with stalactites, lit in colour. Ti Top Island has a crescent of sand for swimming and a steep staircase of several hundred steps to a lookout with one of the best panoramas in the bay. Groups can be large, up to sixty-five people, and the main sights are busy in the middle of the day.

Making the most of it: November is a good month, with dry weather and calm seas, though mornings can be misty, which softens the view of the karsts. Wear shoes with grip for the cave and the Ti Top climb, bring swimwear and a towel, and carry some Vietnamese dong for the optional kayaking and for drinks. If you can spare a night, an overnight cruise lets you see the bay at sunrise when the day boats have gone.
