Truc Bach and West Lake

Pan Pacific Hanoi

A smart five-star tower between West Lake and Truc Bach Lake, with lake and river views, a rooftop bar, an outdoor pool and easy access to Ba Dinh and the Old Quarter.

★★★★★

Pan Pacific Hanoi is a polished five-star hotel with one of the best locations in the city for sightseeing. It stands at 1 Thanh Nien Road, the tree-lined causeway that separates West Lake from the smaller Truc Bach Lake, in Ba Dinh district. From its upper floors the views take in West Lake, Truc Bach and the Red River, and the Summit Rooftop Bar at the top of the tower is one of the city’s favourite places for a sundowner. The hotel sits between the two halves of the visitor’s Hanoi: the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the Presidential Palace are a short ride west, the Old Quarter a short ride south-east, and the lakeside cafés of Tay Ho to the north. Facilities include an outdoor pool, The Spa, a well-equipped fitness centre and several restaurants, including Pacifica for international buffets and Ming for Chinese cuisine, plus a pastry corner and a lobby lounge. Pacific Club rooms add lounge access with breakfast, afternoon tea and evening cocktails. There are also serviced suites for longer stays. It offers five-star comfort at a price usually below the city’s top luxury hotels.

Location and getting around: Thanh Nien Road is one of the prettiest streets in Hanoi, with water on both sides, and it is pleasant for an evening walk. Tran Quoc Pagoda, the city’s oldest Buddhist temple, sits on a little island in West Lake nearby. Taxis and ride-hailing cars reach the Old Quarter in about ten minutes in light traffic, and Noi Bai airport is about thirty minutes away. Parking is free for guests.

The rooms: rooms range from Deluxe and Deluxe Lakeview to Premier rooms, Pacific Club rooms and suites. Book a Lakeview room for the views over West Lake or Truc Bach; the difference is worth the small extra cost. Serviced one- and two-bedroom suites suit families and long stays.

Who it suits: first-time visitors who want an upscale base close to both the historic sights and the Old Quarter, families who want a pool, and business travellers.

Good to know: a service charge and government tax are added to bills, as at most Hanoi hotels. Breakfast is served at Pacifica, and Pacific Club guests can take it in the club lounge. Ask for a high floor on the West Lake side for the sunset.
