Beaufort is the Lowcountry's most beautiful small town and the essential day trip from Hilton Head, about an hour's drive north. Founded in 1711, it is the second-oldest town in South Carolina, and its National Historic Landmark District is a grid of grand antebellum houses with double piazzas, moss-hung live oaks and views across the Beaufort River, so picturesque that Hollywood has filmed here repeatedly, including The Big Chill, The Great Santini and Forrest Gump. Beaufort's history is also one of the most important in the country for understanding emancipation and its aftermath. Union forces captured the area in November 1861, and the Sea Islands around Beaufort became the stage for the so-called Port Royal Experiment, in which formerly enslaved people worked land, attended schools and voted, years before the rest of the South. Reconstruction Era National Historical Park tells that story, and its headquarters and visitor center are in the Old Beaufort Firehouse at 706 Craven Street, in the heart of downtown. Across the river on St. Helena Island, the Penn Center grew out of the Penn School, established in 1862 as one of the first schools in the South for formerly enslaved people; in the 1960s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Southern Christian Leadership Conference staff met there to plan, and the park's Darrah Hall on the campus hosts exhibits on Reconstruction and education. Downtown, Bay Street's shops and restaurants face Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, a long riverside lawn with swings and marsh views. Farther out, Hunting Island State Park has a wild beach, maritime forest and a lighthouse that reopened to climbers on May 26, 2026 after a four-year restoration.
Plan the day around three zones. Start downtown: park once, visit the national park's visitor center at the Old Beaufort Firehouse to orient yourself (check the park's website for current hours and ranger programs), then walk the historic district. The quiet residential streets of The Point, east of downtown, hold the most spectacular houses. Horse-drawn carriage and guided walking tours run from the waterfront and are a good way to hear the stories behind the facades. Lunch on Bay Street or with a view of the river, then stroll Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, where porch swings face the water and shrimp boats pass under the swing bridge to Lady's Island.
In the afternoon, choose between history and beach. History lovers should cross to St. Helena Island for the Penn Center, part of a national historic landmark district at the heart of Gullah Geechee culture, and check the Penn Center's website for museum hours before you go. Beach lovers should continue to Hunting Island State Park, about thirty minutes beyond Beaufort, where the lighthouse, reopened in May 2026 after a restoration that fortified its 167 steps, rises over a wild, eroding beach of driftwood and palmettos; the state park charges admission and the climb is separately ticketed, so check the park's site for tour times. Literary visitors should know that author Pat Conroy, whose novels made this landscape famous, called Beaufort home, and the town honors his legacy.
Is it worth the drive? Absolutely, especially for anyone who enjoyed Savannah or Charleston but wants something smaller and quieter. Leave Hilton Head after breakfast, allow about an hour each way, and stay for an early dinner. If you would rather not rush, spend a night at Anchorage 1770 on Bay Street, an inn in one of the town's oldest houses. Combine with the Gullah heritage sites on Hilton Head for a fuller picture of the region's story.
