Shelter Cove Harbour and Towne Centre

The island's mid-island hub on Broad Creek

Shelter Cove is the closest thing Hilton Head has to a town center, and it is the most useful place on the island to know if you are staying anywhere in the middle of it. It sits on Broad Creek, the long tidal waterway that nearly cuts the island in two, directly across William Hilton Parkway from Palmetto Dunes, and it brings together three things within a few minutes' walk. Shelter Cove Harbour and Marina is a 15.5-acre marina with 178 slips for boats up to 145 feet, ringed by waterfront restaurants and shops; the visitor bureau counts eight restaurants and ten shops around the harbor, and it is one of the island's busiest departure points for dolphin and nature tours, fishing charters, sailing and kayak and paddleboard trips on Broad Creek. Next door, Shelter Cove Towne Centre is the island's main mid-island shopping and dining district, with a supermarket, shops, restaurants and a cinema that make it the practical place to stock up for a rental week. And between them, the town's free Shelter Cove Community Park has a playground, picnic pavilion, open lawn, walking paths and public art beside the water, with free parking. Add the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, the island's professional theater, at the edge of the complex, and you can fill an evening without moving the car. Summer is the harbor's liveliest season, with live music and HarbourFest, which has been known for its Tuesday-night fireworks over Broad Creek; in the cooler months, including November, it is quieter, with restaurants open and boats running on reduced schedules. Strolling, sitting by the water and the park are all free.

On the water: Broad Creek is prime dolphin territory, and the harbor's boat operators run narrated dolphin and nature cruises, sunset cruises and fishing trips of various lengths. Kayak and paddleboard outfitters launch from the Shelter Cove area for guided tours through the marsh, where bottlenose dolphins feed in the channels. Compare options at the harbor or on the marina's booking site, and book ahead in summer and holiday weeks. In November and through winter, choose a mild, calm day and dress in layers; the light on the creek is lovely at sunset.

Eating and strolling: the harbor's restaurants range from casual waterfront spots for fried shrimp and a cold drink to more polished dining rooms, and most have outdoor tables facing the marina, which makes a sunset dinner here one of the easiest pleasures on the island. After dinner, walk the boardwalk around the harbor and over to the park. Families can let children run on the lawn and playground while adults watch the boats come in. The Towne Centre's shops fill a rainy afternoon, and the cinema is a rare indoor evening option.

Getting there: Shelter Cove is mid-island off William Hilton Parkway, about fifteen minutes from Coligny and a short ride from Palmetto Dunes on the island's pathways. Parking is plentiful around the Towne Centre and the park. Guests at the Omni, the Hilton beachfront resort and the Palmetto Dunes villas across the road can walk or bike over, which makes Shelter Cove the natural evening hub for that part of the island. Pair it with a show at the Arts Center or a morning kayak on Broad Creek.
