Disney Explorers Lodge is the best place to stay for a Disneyland-focused trip to Hong Kong, and with the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel closed for a major refurbishment from October 2026, it is now the resort's flagship. Opened in 2017, it is the largest of the resort's hotels, with around 750 rooms, and it is themed on the golden age of exploration: the story is of a society of explorers who have gathered treasures from around the world, and the lobby, corridors and rooms are filled with maps, artifacts, compasses and travel souvenirs. The hotel is built around four themed gardens representing Asia, Oceania, South America and Africa, with plants, sculptures and hidden Disney details for children to find. Rooms are spacious by Hong Kong standards and family-friendly, with two queen beds or a king, themed decor and room for a crib; categories include garden and sea views, and Club rooms with lounge access and perks. There are several restaurants, including an Asian buffet and a sit-down restaurant, plus a lounge bar, and character experiences are offered at selected times. The pool is a highlight for children after a day in the park, with a water-play area for small ones. A free shuttle bus runs between the hotel and the park gates and the MTR station, and the resort has its own ferry pier and walking trails along the bay. Staying here gives you an easier day at the park, the chance of early-entry and resort offers, and a peaceful evening away from the crowds, with the South China Sea and the mountains of Lantau around you.

Why stay at the resort? Hong Kong Disneyland is about 30 to 40 minutes by MTR from the city, so many visitors do it as a day trip. But families with young children often find that staying on site makes everything easier: no MTR transfers with tired children, a pool for the afternoon heat, early-entry and package offers, and the chance to stay for the nighttime castle show without a long journey back. Explorers Lodge is the most spacious and best-equipped of the open resort hotels; Disney's Hollywood Hotel, nearby, is a cheaper, more budget-friendly option with a retro Hollywood theme. The original Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel, the Victorian-style flagship, closed entirely from 12 October 2026 for refurbishment, with no reopening date announced.

The hotel also makes a good base for the rest of Lantau. The Big Buddha and the Ngong Ping 360 cable car at Tung Chung are a short MTR or taxi ride away, the airport is about twenty minutes away, and the Citygate outlets at Tung Chung are close. It is less convenient for the city's main sights; Central and Tsim Sha Tsui are about 40 minutes away, so most families combine a few nights here with a few nights in the city.

Choosing a room: garden-view rooms are the standard; sea-view rooms are worth the extra for the views of the bay and the mountains; Club rooms add a lounge, breakfast and early park benefits; and the suites are spacious for larger families. Book through the official Hong Kong Disneyland website to get package deals with park tickets. The trade-offs are the price, which is high for what is essentially a theme-park hotel, and the distance from the city. But for families focused on Disney, Explorers Lodge is the best choice.
