Hurghada guide

Where to Stay in Hurghada

Hurghada is a long coast, not a single place. How to choose between El Dahar, Al Mamsha El Seyahi, Village Road, Sahl Hasheesh and Soma Bay, with our five hotel picks.

Hurghada is not one neighbourhood but a string of resort areas along the Red Sea, and the right base depends on whether you want town life, a big family resort or a quiet bay. Here is how the areas compare.

El Dahar and the old town: for the town, the marina and local life

El Dahar is the older heart of Hurghada, with markets, cafes and the El Mina Mosque. The Hilton Hurghada Plaza is the pick here, with the hotel stating 2 kilometres to the City Center and 3 kilometres to the New Marina, a pool with slides for children, a spa and several restaurants. It suits first-timers who want to explore on their own and families who like a real town nearby. It has no airport shuttle, so arrange a transfer.

Al Mamsha El Seyahi: for the classic northern beach strip

This long promenade of beachfront resorts is where many family holidays happen. The Steigenberger ALDAU Beach Hotel is our pick, a large resort with gardens, pools and a spa, aimed at families and sociable travellers. Expect an active atmosphere and short taxi rides to the marina and aquarium.

Village Road: for all-inclusive value

Village Road runs south of the centre with big resorts, restaurants and quick access to boats and the marina. JAZ Aquamarine is the pick, a large all-inclusive family resort. It is good value if you want to stay put, and convenient for excursions.

Sahl Hasheesh: for a calmer, planned bay

About eighteen kilometres south of the airport, Sahl Hasheesh has wide streets, an Old Town of cafes, a sunken-city reef for snorkelers and a quiet beach. Baron Palace is the pick, with Arabian-inspired architecture, seven pools, a 600-metre private beach and separate zones for families and adults. It suits couples, honeymooners and multi-generation groups who want space.

Soma Bay: for a polished retreat

The Soma Bay peninsula, south of Hurghada, is self-contained, calm and green. The Kempinski Hotel Soma Bay has 325 rooms and suites, a 5,700 square-metre pool landscape with a lazy river and a spa and thalasso centre. It is the splurge choice and best for couples and families who want a resort base rather than a town.

Choosing by trip type

For couples, choose Baron Palace or the Kempinski. For families, the Hilton Plaza, the ALDAU or JAZ Aquamarine are all strong, with the Kempinski a quieter family option. For exploring on foot and by taxi, choose the Hilton Plaza. For the quietest evenings, choose Sahl Hasheesh or Soma Bay.

Practical notes

Excursions collect from almost every resort, but pickups from outlying areas such as Sahl Hasheesh, Soma Bay and El Gouna can carry a supplement, so ask when you book. Confirm your board basis and any resort fees, check which facilities are open in your travel month, and ask for a quieter room if you dislike evening entertainment. We could not find a budget hotel we could confirm, and one mid-range option was being renovated, so we have left it out; look at smaller hotels in El Dahar if price is your priority.
