★★★★★

The Alexander is the hotel for travellers who like art with their stay. Part of Marriott's Autograph Collection, it stands at 333 South Delaware Street in the CityWay district, on the southern edge of downtown, and art runs through the whole building, from the public spaces to the 209 guest rooms, which are designed to feel like small galleries with curated works by local and international artists. The location is ideal for events: Gainbridge Fieldhouse, home of the Pacers and the Fever, is a few blocks away, and Lucas Oil Stadium and the Indiana Convention Center are minutes on foot. Dining is a strength. Nesso is a proper Italian restaurant with house-made pasta, fresh seafood, Mediterranean flavors and an extensive wine list, and Plat 99 serves breakfast and specialty coffee by day and local beers, craft cocktails and small plates at night. The 24-hour fitness center has Technogym equipment and Peloton bikes, free for guests. It is one of the more design-led stays in the city without the full luxury price.

Location and getting around: CityWay is a modern mixed-use district of apartments and shops, a short walk south of the Circle Centre area. Monument Circle is about a ten to fifteen-minute walk north, and Fountain Square, with its food tour and nightlife, is a similar walk southeast along the Cultural Trail. For the Speedway, The Children's Museum or Newfields, take a taxi or rideshare. The airport is about thirteen miles away.

Rooms and who it suits: the gallery-style rooms suit couples and art lovers, and the location suits sports fans heading to a Pacers or Colts game and convention-goers. Families can find space in the larger rooms, though the hotel has no pool.

Good to know: parking is in the attached CityWay garage, at roughly $54 a day to self-park or $59 for valet, which is worth budgeting for. Pets are welcome, up to two per room, for a non-refundable fee of about $75 per stay. Check-in is at 4pm, which is later than most, and check-out at 11am. Guests must be at least 21 to check in.
