South Africa

Johannesburg & Kruger

Johannesburg is South Africa's biggest, busiest and most history-laden city, and the gateway to the country's best-known wildlife.

Its headline sights tell the story of modern South Africa: the Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill and a guided Soweto tour with Vilakazi Street, alongside the street art of Maboneng and the hollow-cored tower of Ponte City. Outside the city, the Cradle of Humankind and Lesedi Cultural Village are an hour away, and the malaria-free Pilanesberg offers Big Five game drives in a single day. Further east, Kruger National Park delivers the classic safari, best done on a multi-day trip. This guide books each of these properly, with Tiqets and Viator options where they exist, and matches you to the right hotel, from the Saxon's gardens in Sandhurst and the Hyatt in walkable Rosebank to a budget Sandton base and a safari lodge at the Paul Kruger Gate.

Things to do in Johannesburg & Kruger

Hand-picked: every experience here has strong traveler reviews and a verified booking link.

Apartheid Museum

The one museum every Johannesburg visit should include: a powerful, graphic walk through the rise, rule and fall of apartheid, opening with the random racial classification of your entry ticket and ending in the light of the new constitution. Book a half-day Apartheid and Soweto tour with museum entry, or go independently Tuesday to Sunday.

Soweto: Vilakazi Street and Township Tour

Soweto is Johannesburg's largest township and the beating heart of the struggle story: Mandela's old house on Vilakazi Street, the Hector Pieterson Memorial, shebeens, markets and a lively contemporary scene. A guided full-day tour with lunch and the Apartheid Museum is the best way in.

Constitution Hill

A working Constitutional Court built on the site of a notorious prison fort where Gandhi and Mandela were once held. The guided highlights tour takes about an hour; the full site tour takes two. Open daily, with free-entry days on public holidays.

Maboneng Precinct and Street Art Tour

Johannesburg's revived inner-city arts district, whose name means place of light in Sesotho. A guided street art and culture walk is the safest and most rewarding way to see its murals, galleries, rooftops and food.

Lesedi Cultural Village

A living cultural village in the Cradle of Humankind where Zulu, Xhosa, Basotho, Pedi and Ndebele hosts share their homesteads, music, dance and food. Easy to combine with the caves on one guided day trip from Johannesburg.

Pilanesberg National Park Day Safari

The easiest Big Five safari from Johannesburg: a malaria-free game reserve inside an ancient volcanic crater, about two to three hours by road. A full-day open-vehicle tour with a guide is the best way to see it without driving.

Kruger Full-Day Safari from Hoedspruit

If your trip already includes the Greater Kruger or Hoedspruit area, a shared full-day Kruger safari is the best-value way to spend a day in the park. It is not a day trip from Johannesburg; fly or drive to the lowveld first.

Ponte City Tower Tour

A guided visit to Johannesburg's most famous apartment tower, a cylindrical high-rise with a hollow core that dominates the Hillbrow skyline. A short, atmospheric tour with a very large review base.
