Koh Samui guide

Where to Stay in Koh Samui

Which part of Koh Samui to base yourself in, from lively Chaweng and Bophut's Fisherman's Village to Choeng Mon and quiet private bays, with five hotels to match.

Koh Samui is small enough that no area is far from another, but the beaches differ a lot in atmosphere, and where you stay shapes your trip. The simple rule is to choose the beach that matches the evenings you want, then use taxis and tours for everything else.

Chaweng: lively, central and busy

Chaweng is the island's most popular beach, on the east coast, with a long strip of sand and the biggest choice of restaurants, bars, shops and nightlife. It is the natural base for first-timers, groups of friends and anyone who wants to walk to dinner. It is also the busiest and loudest area, so ask for a quiet room. SALA Samui Chaweng Beach Resort is the stylish choice here, with garden and oceanfront wings, many private pool villas and a spa. Chaweng Garden Beach Resort is the budget-friendly option in the middle of the strip, with bungalows, a pool and a beach bar, and it is the pick if you will be out most of the day.

Bophut and Fisherman's Village: easy and atmospheric

On the north coast, Bophut has a calmer beach and the old Fisherman's Village, where converted shop-houses hold restaurants, bars and shops, and a street market runs on Friday evenings. It is a good middle ground, close to the airport and to Chaweng without being in it. Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort is the choice here, beachfront on Bophut Bay with a Bill Bensley-designed spa and a walk to the village for dinner.

Choeng Mon: calm and family friendly

On the north-east corner, Choeng Mon Beach is a quiet, crescent bay with a mix of resorts and small restaurants, about 5 km from the airport. It is a good choice for families and for those who like a laid-back stay with easy access to the sights. Meliá Koh Samui is the standout, with a two-level infinity pool, a large lagoon-style pool with a swim-up bar and a kids club with a mini water park.

Private bays and the quieter coasts: for retreats

The south and west coasts are quieter and greener, with fewer restaurants, a slower pace and the best sunsets. They are the right choice if you want a retreat rather than a base. Banyan Tree Samui sits in a private bay about 19 km and roughly 30 minutes from the airport, with a private pool in every villa and a wellbeing focus. You will need transfers, a rental car or taxis to go out for dinner, so it suits people who plan to stay put.

How to choose

First-timers and groups: Chaweng. Couples after atmosphere and dinner options: Bophut. Families: Choeng Mon. Honeymooners and wellness stays: a private bay. If your budget is tight, Chaweng offers the widest range of lower-priced rooms. If you are splurging, the private-pool villas at Banyan Tree and SALA are the island's signature stays.

Getting around from each area

Taxis are the main option, and fares are negotiated or fixed by area, so ask your hotel for typical prices. Tours include pickup from most beach areas, so your base matters less for day trips. The airport is closest to Bophut, Choeng Mon and Chaweng, and further from the southern and western bays.

Seasons and rates

High season runs roughly from December to April, with the highest rates and the calmest seas. The wetter months from October to December can offer better value, with more rain and swell on boat days. Book early for the peak, and check what your rate includes, since breakfast, transfers and park fees are often separate.
