Where to Stay in Kraków

The four best areas to stay in Kraków for first-timers, couples and families, with honest notes on noise, price and convenience, and one recommended hotel in each.

Kraków is compact, so wherever you stay in the centre you will be walking distance from the main sights. The real choice is about atmosphere: the historic grandeur of the Old Town, the bohemian evenings of Kazimierz, the river views below Wawel, or the practicality of the station area. Here is how they compare, with a hotel we would book in each.

Old Town: the classic first choice

The Stare Miasto, inside the green ring of the Planty, is where most first-timers want to be, and with good reason: you step out of the door onto medieval streets, and the Main Market Square, St Mary's and the museums are all minutes away. It is lively until late, especially at weekends, so light sleepers should ask for a courtyard room. For a special stay, Hotel Stary, just off the square on Szczepańska Street, is the pick: a historic residence with frescoed suites, pools in the vaulted cellars and a seasonal rooftop bar. At the northern edge by the Florian Gate, Hotel Indigo Krakow - Old Town is a stylish, more affordable alternative with a Michelin-recommended restaurant and easy access to the railway station.

Kazimierz: character and nightlife

The old Jewish quarter, about fifteen minutes' walk south of the square, is the most atmospheric place to spend your evenings, with candlelit bars, restaurants and cafes around Plac Nowy and Szeroka Street, and historic synagogues by day. Staying here puts you close to Wawel and across the river from Schindler's Factory. PURO Kraków Kazimierz is a bold design hotel at the edge of the district, with Conran-designed rooms, a gym and spa, and a good eatery and bakery; it suits couples and friends who want modern comfort and an easy stroll to dinner.

Below Wawel: river views and calm

The streets at the foot of Wawel Hill, between the castle and the Vistula boulevards, offer the best of both worlds: the Old Town to the north, Kazimierz to the south and riverside walks on your doorstep. Hotel Pod Wawelem on Plac na Groblach is the natural choice, with castle views from many rooms and on-site parking, rare in central Kraków, which makes it a smart pick for families and drivers.

Around the main station: practical and good value

The streets around Kraków Główny, just northeast of the Old Town, are less charming but very convenient. Airport trains arrive here, buses and minibuses leave for Wieliczka and Zakopane, and many day tours to Auschwitz-Birkenau pick up nearby. ibis Krakow Stare Miasto, about five minutes from the station and fifteen on foot from the square, offers compact, reliable rooms, family options and a car park at budget prices.

Our recommendation

For a first trip of three days, stay in the Old Town or below Wawel. If you are planning several day trips, the station area saves time. If you care most about where you eat and drink each evening, choose Kazimierz.
