The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto occupies one of the finest sites in the city, on the west bank of the Kamo River beside the Nijo-Ohashi bridge, with the river, its herons and the soft line of the Higashiyama hills filling the windows on one side. It is low-rise by design, in keeping with Kyoto's strict height limits, and its architecture is a calm modern take on a Kyoto residence: dark wood, lattice screens, washi paper, stone and water, with the public spaces opening onto gardens and water. Its 134 rooms and suites are among the largest in the city, decorated with Japanese motifs and textiles, with deep bathtubs and, in the river-view categories, the classic panorama across the water to the eastern mountains. Dining is a major draw: Mizuki serves kaiseki, sushi, tempura and teppanyaki in separate counters and rooms; La Locanda is the hotel's Italian restaurant, with Kyoto produce on an Italian menu; there are a lobby lounge and a bar for evening drinks; and a Pierre Herme Paris boutique sells the patissier's macarons and cakes. The La Prairie spa, the first La Prairie hotel spa in Asia, has treatment rooms, an indoor pool, a wellness pool, a sauna and a fitness center. The hotel holds the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating for 2026, its ninth consecutive year. Since March 2026, Kyoto's accommodation tax at this price level is substantial, and the hotel includes it in its rates.
What sets the Ritz-Carlton apart in Kyoto is the combination of seclusion and location. Step out of the door and you can walk along the riverbank paths south to Pontocho and Gion in about fifteen to twenty minutes, or cross the bridge and reach the Okazaki museums and Heian Shrine, yet inside the atmosphere is hushed, spacious and deeply comfortable. Service is polished and personal, and the concierge team is among the best in the city for difficult restaurant reservations, private temple visits, tea ceremonies and introductions to the world of geiko. The hotel's own cultural programs, from incense and calligraphy to guided walks, are thoughtfully done.
Room choice matters. The river-view rooms and suites, facing east across the Kamo to the Higashiyama hills, are the ones to book, especially in spring, when the cherry trees along the river bloom, and in autumn, when the hills turn red; garden-view rooms are calmer and cheaper but lack the signature view. Rates are among the highest in Kyoto, and demand peaks during cherry-blossom season and the autumn foliage season, from mid-November into early December, when you should book months ahead. Note Kyoto's accommodation tax, which from March 2026 is charged per person per night on a sliding scale by room rate; at the Ritz-Carlton's level it is thousands of yen per person per night, and the hotel states that it is included in the rate.
The location in the Kawaramachi-Nijo area is central but quiet, a few minutes' walk from Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae station on the Tozai subway line and Sanjo station on the Keihan line, with taxis at the door. Kyoto Station is about fifteen minutes away by taxi. For travelers who want Kyoto's most complete luxury hotel — space, a spa and pool, excellent restaurants and a riverside setting within walking distance of the old districts — this is the benchmark.
