Miraflores Malecón and Parque del Amor

Clifftop parks and Pacific views in Lima

Miraflores is the district most visitors use as their base, and its cliff-top Malecón is the reason. A continuous run of parks, lawns and sculpture gardens follows the edge of the bluff, with the Pacific spread out below and the surf breaks of the Costa Verde at your feet. Peru Travel, the national tourism board, describes the area as a seafront promenade of parks, sculptures and art and notes that Lima is the only South American capital on the coast. The best-known stop is the Parque del Amor, the Love Park, with its mosaic-covered benches and a large sculpture of embracing lovers, while Parque Kennedy, the lively central square a few blocks inland, adds cafes, craft stalls and a famous population of cats. Larcomar, the shopping and dining centre built into the cliff, gives you a terrace over the ocean. The whole stretch is flat and easy on foot or by bicycle, and it makes a good first-afternoon walk while you adjust to the city. Sunset is the favourite hour, when the light turns the sea gold and the paragliders drift past.

Why it matters: Miraflores is where modern Lima shows its best face. The district has tidy parks, good restaurants and a seafront that locals use every day for jogging, dog walks and weekend strolls, so it is a relaxed introduction to a very large city. It also sits next to the Huaca Pucllana pyramid and the Barranco district, which makes it a natural hub.

How to see it: start at Parque Kennedy, walk down toward the sea, and follow the Malecón north or south for as long as you like. Stop at the Parque del Amor for the sculpture and the views, continue to Larcomar for a drink on the terrace, and consider a bike rental or a guided cycle ride if you want to cover the whole length. Barranco is an easy walk or short taxi ride to the south along the clifftop path.

Good to know: the city has had maintenance work on some structures in the Parque del Amor area, so expect the occasional fenced section, and check conditions locally. Winter months bring a grey coastal mist, known as the garua, which can hide the horizon. The area is busy and generally comfortable, but keep phones and cameras out of sight near the cliff edge and use licensed taxis or ride apps after dark.

Good questions

Is Miraflores safe for visitors?+

It is one of the most comfortable districts for visitors, with regular patrols along the Malecón. Take normal city precautions, keep phones out of sight and use licensed taxis at night.

What is the best time to visit the Malecón?+

Late afternoon into sunset is the favourite for the light and the atmosphere. Between roughly June and October the coast is often grey, so mornings can be just as pleasant.

Is there an entry fee for the Parque del Amor?+

No, the parks and the Malecón are public and free to enter. You pay only for what you buy at nearby cafes and in Larcomar.

How far is Barranco from Miraflores?+

Barranco is the next district south and can be reached on foot along the clifftop in well under an hour. A short taxi or ride-app trip is the simpler option after dark.

Can I cycle the Malecón?+

Yes, bicycles are a popular way to see it, and several operators run guided bike tours through Miraflores and Barranco. The cliff-top path is mostly flat.
