Hotel Britania is a period piece in the best sense. It was designed in the 1940s by Cassiano Branco, one of the leading Portuguese modernist architects, and according to Lisbon's tourism board it is the only hotel of its era in the city to survive essentially intact. Its Art Deco interior has been restored and the building is classified as of historic interest, so staying here feels like checking into the Lisbon of the mid-twentieth century. The lobby has the clean lines, polished wood, marble and chrome of the period, with a small bar where guests gather in the evening, and the details throughout, from the lettering to the light fittings, have been kept or carefully recreated. There are just 33 rooms, including single rooms for solo travellers and one suite, and they are large for central Lisbon, each at least around twenty-two square metres, with period-inspired furniture, comfortable beds and marble bathrooms. The street, Rua Rodrigues Sampaio, runs parallel to Avenida da Liberdade, so it is quiet at night while still being steps from the city's grand boulevard. The hotel belongs to the Lisbon Heritage Collection, a small family-run group of historic boutique hotels known for attentive, unfussy service and thoughtful touches. It is not a place for facilities, with no spa or restaurant beyond breakfast, but for couples, solo travellers and design lovers who value character, space and calm at a fair price, it is one of the most charming addresses in Lisbon.
The location is central but peaceful. Avenida da Liberdade, with its shops, cafés and kiosks under the trees, is one block away; the Avenida metro station is a few minutes' walk; Restauradores, Rossio and the Baixa are a pleasant walk downhill; and Príncipe Real is uphill to the west. Dozens of restaurants are close by, from neighbourhood tascas to smart dining rooms around the Avenida.
Living in it: rooms are spacious and quiet, so even standard rooms work well for longer stays. Single rooms are a rare boon for solo travellers, who are often charged double occupancy elsewhere. Breakfast is served in the hotel and is a good, generous start to the day. Paid parking is available if you are driving, which is useful in a city where parking is difficult.
Base math: Britania sits in the upper mid-range, usually well below the big luxury hotels on the Avenida, and represents excellent value for its combination of character, space and location. Choose it for a romantic break, a solo trip or a stay that should feel distinctive without being showy. Families needing interconnecting rooms or a pool should look elsewhere.
