The Pousada de Lisboa offers something no other hotel in the city can: a front-row address on Praça do Comércio, the grand riverside square rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. The building, on the east side of the square, rose in the post-earthquake reconstruction and served for generations as a government ministry, most recently the Ministry of Internal Administration, before it was converted into a hotel in 2015 as part of the Pousadas de Portugal collection, the network of historic hotels in castles, convents and palaces across the country. It is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and is rated five stars. The conversion respected the building's character. The Great Hall, once the Council of Ministers room, keeps its gilded ceiling and chandelier; corridors and public rooms feature works of art of historical importance lent by the Lisbon Museum; and the ninety rooms and suites, spread over four floors, combine classic furnishings with modern comforts. Rooms facing the square and river are the prize. Facilities are unusually complete for a historic building in the old centre: a heated indoor pool open year-round, a gym and sauna, and massage treatments by appointment. The restaurant, RIB Lisboa, specialises in quality meats and Portuguese wines, and breakfast is served in the Pátio Amália. Outside, the square, the Cais das Colunas and the Rua Augusta Arch are steps away, the Baixa grid opens to the north, and Alfama begins just to the east. For first-timers it is one of the most convenient and atmospheric bases in Lisbon.

The pousada sits at the hinge of the city. From the door, you can walk west along the river to Cais do Sodré and the Time Out Market in about ten minutes, north up Rua Augusta to Rossio in about the same, or east and uphill into Alfama, the cathedral and the castle. The Terreiro do Paço metro station, on the blue line, is next door, and ferries leave from the adjacent terminal for the south bank. Tram 15 to Belém stops on the square, and tram 28 passes a few minutes' walk away. Few hotels make the city easier to explore on foot.

Living in it: rooms vary with the historic structure, so check the category carefully; square-facing rooms have the views and the atmosphere, while inner rooms are quieter. The square is a public space with occasional concerts, festivals and New Year celebrations, which are wonderful to watch from a window but can be noisy. The indoor pool is a rare treat in central Lisbon and particularly welcome after a hot day on the hills.

Base math: this is a top-of-the-market hotel, but rates can be competitive with boutique options in the Chiado, especially outside peak months. The value lies in the location, the sense of history and the facilities. Book it for a first visit, a romantic break with river views, or anyone who wants Lisbon's most famous square as their front yard.
