Luxembourg City is small, and with free buses and trams, almost every sensible base puts the Old Town within fifteen minutes. The choice comes down to atmosphere, budget and what you want outside your door: the squares and ramparts of the upper town, the practical streets around the station, or the modern towers and museums of Kirchberg. Hotels here are priced for business travellers, so weekends are often better value than weekdays. Here are the areas that work best for a first visit, and the hotel we would pick in each.
The upper town: for atmosphere
Staying in the Ville Haute means stepping out onto the Place d’Armes, walking the Corniche before breakfast and strolling home from dinner in the Grund. It is the obvious choice for a short break or a romantic trip. The downsides are higher prices, limited car access and busy squares in December. Our splurge is Hotel Le Place d’Armes, a Relais and Châteaux hotel on the main square with 28 rooms and suites, quiet courtyards and the French restaurant La Cristallerie. For better value a few streets away, Hotel Simoncini on Rue Notre-Dame is a small art hotel with 35 individually furnished rooms, breakfast included and covered parking.
Gare and the Pétrusse valley: for views and trains
South of the Pétrusse valley, the station district is the city’s busiest neighbourhood, with more hotels and lower prices. It is the best area for rail arrivals, airport buses and day trips, and it is a fifteen-minute walk or a short tram ride to the upper town. The streets nearest the station are less charming and can feel rough late at night. On the valley’s edge, the Sofitel Luxembourg Le Grand Ducal gives you five-star comfort and one of the city’s great views from its top-floor L’Observatoire bar, about 300 metres from the station. For a budget stay, the ibis Styles Luxembourg Centre Gare is two minutes from the platforms, with air-conditioned rooms and family rooms for up to five.
Kirchberg: for museums, concerts and modern comfort
Across the Red Bridge, the Kirchberg plateau is home to the European institutions, Mudam, the Dräi Eechelen fortress museum and the Philharmonie. It is quiet at night but well linked to the centre by the free tram. The Meliá Luxembourg sits right between Mudam and the Philharmonie, with a sauna and Turkish bath, a gym, family rooms and a welcome for pets.
Matching base to trip
For a romantic weekend, choose Hotel Le Place d’Armes. For views and five-star comfort near the trains, the Sofitel. For a good-value stay in the old town, Hotel Simoncini. For art, concerts or a family trip that needs room to spread out, the Meliá. For a tight budget or a Vianden day trip, the ibis Styles by the station.
Practical tips
Check whether breakfast is included, because it is expensive to add. Ask about parking if you are driving, since the upper town has limited car access. Rates rise during big conferences and in December, when the Christmas markets draw visitors, so book early for those periods. Wherever you stay, remember that buses, trams and trains are free, so you never need to buy a ticket.
