Allegro Madeira, Adults Only

A modern four-star adults-only hotel in Funchal’s Lido area, with sea-view balconies, an outdoor pool, a wellness centre and a rooftop bar with all-round views of the bay.

★★★★★

Allegro Madeira is a contemporary adults-only hotel run by the Barceló group in the Lido area, the seaside district west of the centre where most of Funchal’s resort hotels, promenades and bathing places are found. It has 124 rooms, many with sea or city views and private balconies, a fresh, modern style and a relaxed atmosphere aimed at couples and friends rather than families; guests must be at least eighteen. The outdoor pool is the daytime hub, the Lido Restaurant serves buffet meals with international cooking, and there are two bars plus a rooftop bar with 360-degree views over the city and the Atlantic, one of the best places in the area for a sunset drink. The wellness centre has a gym, sauna and steam room, free for guests, with massages and treatments by reservation. It is a well-priced, low-stress base for an active trip, with the Lido bathing complex a short walk away and the centre a few minutes by taxi.

Location and getting around: the hotel is at Rua Gorgulho 1, a few minutes on foot from the seafront promenade and around seven minutes from the Lido bathing complex, with its pools and sea access. Restaurants, bars and supermarkets line the streets around Estrada Monumental. Central Funchal and the marina are about five minutes by car or a pleasant walk along the coast, and buses run regularly into town. The airport is roughly twenty minutes away by car, and the hotel can arrange a shuttle for a fee.

The rooms: bright and contemporary, with balconies on many categories. Sea-view rooms are worth the upgrade for the morning light over the Atlantic; city-view rooms are cheaper and still comfortable.

Who it suits: couples, friends and solo travellers who want a modern, adults-only hotel close to the sea at a fair price, especially those who will spend their days out on levadas and tours.

Good to know: on-site parking is available for a daily fee, subject to space, which helps if you hire a car. Breakfast is a generous buffet; check whether it is included in your rate. There is an 18-hole golf course nearby for players.
