Reid’s Palace is one of the great historic hotels of Europe and the splurge choice in Madeira. It was opened in 1891 by the Reid family on a clifftop at the edge of Funchal’s bay, with subtropical gardens tumbling down towards the sea and direct access to the water, and over the generations it has welcomed royalty, writers and statesmen, Winston Churchill among them. Today it is run by Belmond and has 126 rooms and suites, from doubles to junior suites, suites and two Signature Suites, most with views over the ocean or the gardens. Dining is a big part of the experience: William is the Michelin-starred fine-dining restaurant, Ristorante Villa Cipriani serves Italian food, Brisa do Mar is the casual al fresco option, and there is the 1891 Bar, a Tea Library and a gelateria. Afternoon tea on the ocean-view terrace is an island institution, open to non-residents and best booked ahead.
Location and getting around: the hotel is at Estrada Monumental 139, at the eastern start of Funchal’s hotel zone, on a headland above the harbour. The marina, the seafront gardens and the city centre are reachable on foot in around twenty minutes, or by a short taxi ride, and the Lido area with its promenade and restaurants is close by in the other direction. The hotel can arrange transfers, cars and excursions, including levada walks and boat trips.
The rooms: classic and elegant, with a light, refreshed style, and many with balconies over the sea. Junior suites and suites give more space for longer stays, and the Signature Suites are among the most impressive rooms on the island. Ask for a sea view; it is what Reid’s is all about.
Who it suits: couples celebrating a special occasion, travellers who love historic hotels and families who want space and service, thanks to the Fun@Reid’s club for children. It also suits anyone planning a slow winter escape.
Good to know: there are three outdoor pools in the gardens, plus the Maré Spa and a gym open around the clock. Pets are welcome. Dress is smart in the evenings at the main restaurants. Even if you stay elsewhere, afternoon tea here is a lovely treat.
